Howdy knifenutz.....

A question that's been swirling my mind lately is though I swore off budget knives awhile ago, can't help but be intrigued by sheer plethora of designs these days. They could be from China or a U.S. based company but there's no denying some are legitimately great knives in terms of cost/value and actual use. One quote that really stuck by me was off a thread from a wise member here that contributed advice sought for new members of the knife community. Something along the lines of "what's the best advice you'd give a newbie" or "what have you learned the most in your collecting journey", etc. The quote which stuck with me was "cut the line and go straight to customs". Well, sadly by the time I saw this I was already deep in the progression game yet I did go custom and was fortunate to own a few.

The advice is sound I tell you. Then this past year and a half came across some budget designs and models under $250 that kind of blew me away in terms of value. There's absolutely no denying the practicality here. If you're like me then you have multiple hobbies but only limited funds to which to supply to those. Catch the drift? I've seen the same lately too, guy's selling off a lot of their collection to fund some new golf clubs or new motorcycle parts.

As much as I love my small batch of customs, I'm teetering that line and wondering if I could go back to only have budget or $250 and under knives and be happy as well. 🤔 Nowadays especially it seems like there is no better time with all the great options. Thus very curious, has anyone done this and never looked back? It doesn't mean you lost the love for great knives or expensive knives but you somehow made peace with the fact that you'd like to channel those funds into other projects or hobbies or life expenses and in the meantime actually found you still enjoy your new collection and knives just as much.

I like the few customs I have. I gotta say, Biryukov is really a great value in my opinion. $540 for 4.2" S390 laminate, mirror polished blade, carbon fiber linerless scale. The S125V version is under $500, has an orange peel finish.

My Alan Davis is beautiful, and the best action on a flipper I've ever experienced. Corsican ram horn scales. Not all that ergonomic, but works great for light use.

I haven't been able to bite the bullet and spend more than $1000 yet. But the the I have I definitely appreciate and enjoy. Especially the excellent heat treatment.

I enjoy customs, semi-customs and production runs. Doesn’t matter if I really like a design which that it is. That said the money has to be there also. 🤪

I have yet to experience ownership of a custom knife. Although , I’d like to someday. But I feel like a custom titanium frame lock (non-flipper) would run well over $800 which is my comfort cap.

I'd rather have 2 CRKs than 5 Spydercos personally. I've come to prefer quality over pretty much every other factor. I trust my CRKs to hold up to tasks that wold squash a spider, let alone a butterfly.

I have customs, and production and some that run a little of both, but I have also found some customs at affordable prices that didn’t break the bank, and I don’t mind using. I also have a few SW knives and budget knives that cut just fine and I feel are good values, and I enjoy using them.

Outside of slipjoints and my deadlock collection, I’ve only got one custom (Rassenti Nirvana).

I seem to have found CRK to be what I go for these days. Large Seb 31 is predictable and my daily carry. I know it’s repairable (and replaceable if lost).
