During vacationtime in our summerhouse, I always try to get some time at the local Put&Take lake for Rainbow Trout.
I usually go by car and always return back home in the evening.
I often use my newest knife on these trips and sometimes bring more than one.
Here are the Fällkniven SK3 Juni, Bark River Journeyman, Fällkniven F2 and the BR PSK knife with Otterboxkit.
I also always have a Leatherman Multi-Tool.
Many knives at that occasion, but no fish to use them on!
This time I took the bicycle loaded with camping-gear and stayed for 3 days and two nights.
I switched the Journeyman for a larger knife, the Fällkniven NL2 Odin.
However, I could have left the Odin at home, as the area is full of deadfall Juniper and the summer weather was as good as it gets.
There never was any need for anything larger than regular 3" - 5" beltknives.
The Juni was used for food only and excelled in this job.
Here it's used for Salami & Cheese sandwiches.
I had a brand new tent, as my old school cotton canvas tent had gone too brittle.
It was with sadness I had to toss it in a container at the recycling station.
The new tent is a centerpole pyramid model, also a bit of old school, but only 25% of the weight!:thumbup:
The centerpole goes through both the inner and outer tents and it was initially a bit tricky, to find the proper lenght between the tents.
It has space enough for two in good comfort, as the innertent has a floorspace of 2 x 2 metre's.
I guess it can take 3-4 people, if they are used to sleep in tight quarters.
The ground is covered mostly with flat stones and I would have had good use of a cordless Drillhammer, for the tent pegs!
I did find cracks in the stones though and lots of Juniper to tie the lines into.
With a Thermarest airmatress I slept in comfort on the stones!
The fishing didn't go that well, as the Rainbows can be very lazy in the summer.
Innumerous small perches and whitefish took the fly or the shrimps I also use for bait.
I could have fed myself well on the perches only.
For two days I only spotted two active Rainbows.
Usually I can see dozens of them.
However, one of the Rainbows did swallow my by then badly smelling shrimp and got hooked!
Back at the campsite, some 300 metre's from the lake, I quickly collected Juniper deadfall for the fire.
With a few strokes from the fire-steel, I had a small cooking fire going directly on the stoneground.
While the fire was getting ready, I put on the propane kitchen and boiled the potatoes.
The fish was deboned with the F2 and a barbequefork was also made with the F2.
I needed a thin stick to check when the potatoes where cooked and again the F2 saw service.
It's the same knife as in my avatar and in the top pic.
It's the one with black rubber handle and that is how it looked before it was rehandled in Stag.
Here it is as it looks today.
I just love this knife and it's a given choice for my fishing trips!
Back to the Potatoe's!
Almost ready!
In the meantime, the fish got some salt & pepper and was put on the glowing coals.
Ready!
I ate it still on the fork, using the fishskin as a plate.
I put the potatoes and melted butter directly on the fish.
It was the best fish I've eaten for a very long time!
No Outdoors meal is perfect without Coffee and a hook was made for the coffeecan, to hang above the coal.
I took the kettle and had my Coffe at the lake and ended the day with a nice sundown.
The next day started as good as this one ended, except that I had caught a summerflue and started to get sick.
So I decided to go back to the house, while I was still fit to pedal the bicycle.
The fireplace was covered with flat stones and it will take a sharp eye to see where it was.
The packing took it's time, as I knew my strenght was limited.
I did it right the first time and I also got the litterbag with me, hanging as a stinking white football from the rear of the bicycle.
The locals I passed by, saw the litterbag and saluted me wholehartedly!
I pedaled in a slow tempo and reached home without getting worse, but I slept early that evening and didn't wake-up early!
For this kind of light camping in favorable weather, I didn't need any big knives.
I used the Leatherman when fishing, together with the F2.
The F2 did all the light woodworking, as the deadfall was very easy to break by hand.
The little Juni performed all the small tasks around the food.
All in All, the trip was great even if it was shorter than expected.
It's no big deal for me, as I'm 57 and I nowadays honestly find the comforts of the summerhouse very attractive
....
Regards
Mikael
