Hi Guys, I'm leaving in 20 minutes for a camping and fishing trip. We will be up Fairview canyon at Huntington Reservoir. We are leaving at 1pm local time and should be back sometime after 1pm tomorrow. Hope you all have a great weekend!!

Thanks Jake!! My friend William and I had a good time. The temp was in the mid 90's here in Provo over the weekend but up at Mamoth lake it was in the mid to upper 70's. Everything was soo green!! Was nice to be up in the mountains for 24 hours. Wish we could have stade longer. Would have but I had to be home for work Saturday night. I'm sorting through pictures and will post some when they are ready.

We might go back next weekend...

Glad you had a good time, Heber. I try to hold on to the green as much as possible, around here it turns to white too fast :)
Now git back up there and take some knife pron pics:)

Yeah, but did y'all catch anything? :p Pics are proof, tall tales are just that and stink like dead 3 day old fish tails; speaking as one fisherman to another, everyone knows that fishermen are the world's biggest and best liars.:D ;) :o

Nope, we didn't get any fish. In fact, we didn't even do any fishing! Some how everyone else with fishing gear didn't show up so it was just William and I. Since he didn't have any gear or a licence I desided to go hiking with him instead of fish. We had a good hike though.

We camped on the South east corner just off the Dam in a little valley canyon. And when I say little I mean maybe 15 feet wide and 60 feet long or so. We were very secluded, you could only see camp from about 40 feet of the trail that runs along the dam. We were also about 600 yards from the parking lot line of site. Since we were waiting for friends (that never showed up) and cooking chili we desided not to do a fire till it got dark. So you won't see any campfire pictures... But here we go:

William and I cooking Dutch Oven chili over a single Burner backpacking stove. We dug a little hole and placed the stove in it then put 3 rocks around the hold the stove up to the perfect hight. Worked really well, cooked all our meals this way:

I took this picture while standing in the lower 3rd of the canyon facing the Dam. The section of the dam you see is the section of the trail that you can see camp from. At night all you could see from the parking lot and road was a slight glow from my Propane Lantern.

My tent pitched on the north ridge or our little canyon. Even though there were not a lot of trees you couldn't see the tent unless you were about 50 to 40 feet close or closer.

The parking lot, restrooms on the left and a nice gazibo on the right at the edge of the trees. Mamoth lake is where a Wolly Mamoth was discovered back in 88 along with other fossils. So theres lots of information placks around.

The Long shadows of Sunset acrost the dam and valley we were in.

Here are some more pictures from the trip, all of these are from Saturday morning before heading out. And yes we have knife pics!! :)

My EK Knight Fighter after using it to slit some boards another camper left at our campsite some time before we got there. Knife was made by the group at BRKT some years ago for EK. I was lucky enough to get one. It has a full hight convex grind and is made from A2 steel. First time taking it camping since I got it 4 years ago. It's awesome!!

Me Posing with my modified HI Bolo. Check out the colors I'm wearing. if I'm in the trees and brush you couldn't see me at any great distance because I would just blend it. Will went out about 200 yards from camp and I went to the tree line and I would vanish. Even others walking along the trail wouldn't see me when asked to look. I was only visible when moving. Sorry no pics to show that though.

Will taking a swing at a dead evergreen tree with the HI Bolo. We did a munch of chopping practice Saturday morning, at the start of it Williams technique wasn't good but in the end he did well. This is in the begining.

One more hit and I'll have this log cut off. This last blow sunk about 2" into the log and it nearly came down. William stopped me and kicked it over.

The HI Bolo and I posing. We are at the upper edge of the canyon we camped in right before it gets steep and goes up the ridge.

I hope you all enjoy the pictures. It was fun camping and taking them.

-Edited to add- I've probably mentioned this before that I've been rather poor at chopping with the HI Bolo. Well I've done a little practicing here at my apartment (just practicing the swing) and then again on some logs at camp. It only took me a little while at camp to figure out the proper hold and wrist flick for this blade. It's slightly different then a Khukuri and thats all I've used for so long. Nice to finally be descent with something else. - William did pretty good too after learning some basics. With some more practice I think he would make a chopping monster! :)

Thanks for the pics Heber! You've really grown up the last few years, seems to me it wasn't all that long ago that you were just a tall gangling kid, to me anyway.;) :D
It's been so long now since I was anywhere out west and especially near Utah I often forget or simply don't recall how much the country and terrain can change in just a few miles or thousand(s) of feet or how beautiful it all is.

Tell us though, wasn't it kinda tricky sleeping on the side of the little canyon like that, even with your feet downhill? ;) :D
When I was in my teens my friends and I slept outside most of every summer as well as went camping/fishing quite a bit. A lot of my friends couldn't get over and laughed at me something awful because I would dig myself a somewhat shallow, "butt/hip hole" where I was going to sleep and especially on hard ground. That is until they would wake up with a bad/stiff back ache the next morning because the hard ground didn't give like the usually soft mattresses they were used to sleeping on.:D And if we were going to be there for another night or two you I could bet on them asking me for advice on how deep, wide, and long to dig one for themselves the next night. I always had the last laugh.:D
Now for a long time folks have had the choice of getting one of those fancy soft sleeping mats, although I'd still want/need a "butt/hip hole.";) :D <VBESEG>

Yvsa, I sure have grown up. When I first started posting here 7 years ago I was about 6'3" tall and 150 to 160 pounds. Today I'm 6' 4.75" and about 185 to 190. My chest and arms have really filled out in the last year. It's felt kind of strange growing out of clothes when I have not gained any hight, but it also feels good too. The muscle is nice!! One girl commented the other day about it "You are still slender but you look stronger and thicker". Thanks for also noticing. I feel like I'm finally growing into my hight. LOL!!

Sleeping at such a slant on the side of the hill was rather uncomfortable. I don't know how I didn't notice the slope when I took that picture the evening before. William says I looked ragged when I first woke up. I felt it too. IF we camp there again, I'll bring my shovel so I can level out that area or I'll sleep where William was, his spot was nice and level. The Hip/Butt holes/dents work really well specially with a foam pad or air mattress over them. To bad I didn't think of that before pitching my tent on the side of a hill!! LOL!! I think William was quietly laughing at me the whole night because he noticed the slope that I didn't. :foot:

Huntington Res is a lovely spot. But in late April it will still have to much snow on it so we will be having our get together up at the Spring City Camp ground. But some friends and I do plan on camping at Huntington again this year, just in the summer or fall. We are also thinking about doing some sleding at the dam also in the next few weeks.
