Hi all,

Just a note to let you know I will be completely out of the loop from Feb 9 (tonight) through Feb 16th. Headed to the hills to teach a week of Arctic survival skills.

BTW... I will not be in shorts

Best to all....

I'm am back.... My students learned that personal protection covered: clothing, shelter, and fire... in that order of importance.

Clothing: They increased their insulation quality by adding dry material between their layers... they used the COLDER acronym.

Shelter: They realized that this meant more then creating a bough bed. They build complete natural shelters and snow caves... they slept in them.

Fire: they realized this was the third line of personal protection and meet the first two first before advancing their skills at using a metal match, flint and steel, and a bow and drill.

They also learned how important it was to begin signaling right away using multiple different tools. They learned the importance of water and food was de-emphasized. They learned to navigate to a well traveled road and how to take care of themselves mentally and physically (this includes avoiding frostbite).

It was a great trip and it is good to be home. I am here one week and then off to Mt Shasta for a week of winter survival and avalanche training.

Great to be back....
