... and want to *try* to read a good book while I recover from having a few teeth pulled Friday morning. Thought I'd stop by the library before hand. Any recommendations on some good books to read? I'm into the cop/mafia/hit-man type stuff, preferably non-fiction. Also have an interest in economics (stock market, business, general investing).

Any ideas what to get?

Thanks!!

Try The Westies: Inside New York's Irish Mob by T.J. English. It's a pretty chilling account about the Irish mob running the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood in Manhattan in the 1970's. They hired out as assassins to the Italian mafia (who feared them due to their unpredictable brutality).

Good luck with the oral surgery.

Thanks for the tips and kind thoughts. The last time I was laid up, I had just purchased a few Dilbert books at a discount at the local Walden Books. Dilbert Future and The Way of the Weasel, IIRC.

I'll check these titles out. We have a pretty large library... typically can find something interesting if need be.

Marathon Man is a 1974 paranoid thriller novel by William Goldman.:D

"Is it safe?"
sorry, couldn't stop myself.

If you want to go old school, try Gangs of New York, by George Asbury. Basis for the underappreciated Scorcese film, and a very good book. Crips and Bloods got nothing on these gangs!

Might consider books on tapes (CD's) or DVDs. just a thought..... IF you have pain meds, and use them, you might be a bit drousy.

Good Luck and fast recovery!

The best thriller novels ever:

Dirty White Boys by Stephen Hunter

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris

The best novel series of all time: the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian, set in the period 1800-1815. The first one is Master and Commander.

Excellent SF:

Pavane and The Chalk Giants, both by Keith Roberts

The Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven

Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter is a good book about a sniper. It was the book Shooter was based on.
