Gonna buy a Military

Well, after much thought I'v decided it's time to get my self one of the classics.
I'm gonna get a plain edge military in the very near future. The only problem is that I can't decide if I should get plain black g-10 or digi-camo. I like the look of both and I was hoping for some pictures to help me decide (stock photo's arn't any fun ;) ) the knife's gonna see alot of work in the bush and some skinning/ gutting on top of that. I was worried about setting the camo down and finding in stuck in my hand latter, but I reailsed that 1. I'v never set down a knife and not been sure where I put it, and 2. the black wouldn't really show up any better lol. So misplaceing it isn't an issue lol. (I don't want the orange because the knife will end up getting dirty and looking like crap when it's packed full of mud)

So, lets see 'em! everybody loves showing off their military collections :D

Thanks guys and gals!!

thought about it but, thats too much cash right now- it's also a little fancy, I'd get that if I had a millie collection and wanted the latest and greatest. It's a great looking knife but not ideal for me right now.

Not a good photo, but the best I have:

If it's going to be a hard user, I'd go for black on black. Worn coatings are badass :D

I must agree with this.

I will go further to say that while I really dig the camo and the orange, I think that over time they will prove trendy whereas black has been a good color since the cave men started making edged tools (joking).

The Ti is a neat option, but it will likely lack the grip of g-10 and you will pay a premium to get it. I have some Ti Buck knives from the 80s that I thought were cool at the time, but somehow they now seem trendy again.

Not sure if this helps, but when I buy a knife and have to contemplate the color choices, these are the thoughts I consider...if color is important to me now, it will be important later...when later comes, will this nifty color still be my first choice? Black is pretty easy to not hate.

In my opinion, the black blade with the digi camo is the best looking knife spyderco puts together. Real sweet looking knife.

Don't know why, but I'm not a fan of coated blades on folders. I like to see my steel :D
Starting to lean towards the camo tho...

The thing about the camo is that each knife will have a different pattern. If you can find a brick & mortar store with reasonable prices, and see before you buy, that'd be your best bet.

Thats what I was thinking but my brick and mortar store wanted $230 for a plain black :barf:

The Military is a great knife and deservedly has a lot of fans. I really like mine, but I had a couple problems when I got it and thought that I'd share my experiences w/ you so that you are a fully informed buyer.

The blade wasn't centered on my Military when I got it.

Apparently this is not an uncommon problem. When I posted a thread about it others reported the same problem.

Here's the thread I posted in.

I also stripped some of the little torx screws. I contacted Spyderco about these two issues and they immediately sent me a set of replacement screws and called my on the phone to walk me through the process to center the blade.

Spyderco has great customer service and they responded to my problem very quickly. However, my blade is still not completely centered. The problem may be partly my fault because as soon as I got it to a position I could live with I stopped trying to get it perfect.

I've been very careful to only use very little torque on the small #6 torx screws. I hold the bit in my hand instead of using the bit driver. The handle screws do have a tendency to work loose after a while and I occasionally have to tighten them. I'm reluctant to put loctite on them due to my previous problem with stripping the screws.

I'm not trying to talk you out of getting a Military and I would have no hesitation in getting more. In fact I probably will get more in the future. I just wanted to make you aware of some common issues you may have.

Here are some more threads that might interest you.

Thanks alot for the links cgmblade. Some good reading. Don't worry you didn't scare me out of getting one- but it is good to know what kind of problems I might encounter.

Afraid of losing it? Orange!

It's an AWESOME knife!

Exactly. They look great too, and being a limited edition, will hold their value well.

That said, second to orange in your case, I would go with the camo instead of black, either blade. Camo with a black blade, good luck finding that outside if you drop it though.

Go orange and dont look back. And if someone makes a remark about your orange knife, open up their throat with it. Then tell the judge "but your honor, look, its a safety knife, not some tacticool mall ninja blade. It was self defense!".:eek::eek::eek:
Just kidding.:)

I was concerned at how much dirt stands out on the orange G10 at first, but after you get a little more on there, you start to loosen up. Black and orange is a pretty good color combo anyway. I'm more concerned the orange stands out too much for EDC, but for camping it's perfect.
