I've got a nice piece of 5' curly maple that is begging to be made into a spear. I've got the choice, Forging a 1" bar of 5160 into a integral ferrule type blade or use flat stock and make a socket blade like Tia Goo's bushy's. I've got 1084 or 5160 for the flat stock. What say's the fellas.

Do it right and make an integral ferrule. I'd use 5160 , it's tougher for when you hit armour or bone.

I say use the 5160. I have alot of khukris in it and they are tough. I would be willing to send you a piece of S7 shock steel but I have no idea how it would be in the forge and heat treating it could be a problem but I think that it would be a great spear head.

I'm wondering what would be the best way of heat teating the thing. I was thinking about doing a full quench on the whole thing and draw back the tang up to the ferrule blade intersection. I dont want it to have a sharp transition from hard to soft. What about a full quench for a count of 3 and then pull out and then back in with just the blade/

That sounds good, Mark. Why not clay everything but the edges? That would make a tough spearhead also.

Type of HT depends somewhat on the shape , what will it look like ?

If you want to get fancy with it, have the body of 5160 and the cutting edge of something with more carbon....Then quench the whole thing, and use the tempering temperature for the harder steel....draw the shaft down to a deep blue. If the tmpering temp is above 400, you should end up with a very springy body with a hard edge.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Pictures tommorow:D This thing is quite a weapon.I mean hunting tool. I think I might go down to the dismal swamp and kill me a bear with it;) Yea right.
