I'm looking for a nice small knife with a blade that is 2.5 inches or less. I have a few benchmades and an Emerson mini commander on its way, the problem is that none of my knives (other than my SAKs) have blades that are 2.5 inches. The reason for the 2.5 inches is that I got to a state college and it is illegal to carry anything over the 2.5 inch limit. I'm looking for a nice sing blade, one hand opener. It would be used for edc and hiking(i go to Humboldt state, so lots of hiking up here). Can anyone recommend anything?

Spyderco Dragonfly.
Spyderco Cricket

I also really doubt you'd get in trouble with anything that was say 2.88 or 2.95 inches long. If you want to do that go with a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian or a Benchmade 707.

:)

You sound like a man in need of a Chris Reeve Mnandi or perhaps a discontinued Umfaam. Both are smaller siblings to the Sebenza and are about all you can hope for in a small knife. They are small, sleek and unbelievable well built of top shelf materials. You couldn't go wrong with one of these.

A Benchmade 770 would be a nice alternative, but isn't even close to the Chris Reeves stuff IMHO. Be prepared to pay for CRK though as it comes at a premium price.

Try Spyderco. I have a Copilot (2" blade) and a "Q" knife (2-1/2" blade) with the laser-cut blade and skeletonized handles and like them both. I don't know if they still make either, but I'll bet they have something that would work.

Im not a huge fan of the spyderco designs for some reason. both the benchmade 707, and 770 look kind of neat. They are slightly over the 2.5 inch range, but as copper said, i probably can get by with somthing under 3 inches.

I'd have to recomment dropping by the Spyderco site for this short of a blade. Also, they are one of the few companies making quality users in the 2.5 inch and less blade length.

Dodo looks different cool to me, and it performs most of my everyday cutting functions great. A deciding factor for me was a sufficient handle to get a good grip on. But it appears to be a love/hate thing for many people. Still, it was bought (right after I got rid of most of my <3.5 inch knives) to meet a similiar arbitrarily chosen blade limit.
From a distance, it is obviously less than 3 inches.

The Benchmade 707 appeals to me, and for this length of blade I'd go for one with serrations. But it is too long.

Some of the Kershaws are well regarded and posses that short of a blade. Had a Cross-Cut and Chive I liked OK, but neither was a real "give it to me" user.

what do you guys think about the benchmade 705? looks kind of neet. does any one know what these guys go for though? I cant seem to find to many online...

I generally decide the on-the-street value of a knife by what it goes for on ebay.

The 705, a nice knife by the way, has been going for $45 to $80 of late (for the regular production versions).

Do a search for Benchmade, title and description. Also search the completed auctions to see what they sold for previously.

How about the Benchmite from Benchmade? I have a Spyderco Mouse that I like a great deal; perhaps you should consider the upgraded version from Tim Wegner?

If you can find one, I like the Cold Steel Trail Guide 'medium,' which has about a 2.5" blade. The Trail Guide has been discontinued but seems to still be widely available, but the mediums are are little harder to find than the larges (which have about a 3.5" blade). Carbon V blade with thumb hold, pocket clip, Zytel handles, nice strong lockback.

Really love the Spyderco Meerkat. Even the guys at the office start to like the small and cute knife. Blade is a tad under 2.5.

If you are more into "gent"-style take a look at an Eickhorn Gentleman-1 or something similar to it.

Spyderco Dodo is small enough and quality enough to qualify also.

They are also some kind of cutting machines too. Don't let that small size fool you. These things are some great performers.

In honor of the imposed blade limit, I would suggest the Emerson Karambit. It's about as much whupa$$ as you can fit into 2.5 inches.:D

IMO the best sub 2.5" out there is the Spyderco Kopa, just pick the handle material you like best.
