Whats something good for a short trip in winter. Im thinking kelty redwing but Mystery Ranch has some nice but expensive offerings. Does one get what they pay for here
or is it just marketing money?

Here's an example of you getting more than you pay for. A used US military ALICE pack. They can be had very commonly over the interwebs for around $45US, appx $50 Canadian, with frame. They are very well put together, usually the used ones are still in great shape, the only reason they're so cheap is that they were pumped out like jelly beans in the '60s and '70s.

I have had good experiences with my gregory packs in the past. I have used and abused them for miles and miles and they keep performing well.

How much gear will you carry?

Alice Packs
Molle II rucksack
Eblerstock Halftrack

Some packs to look.

I have a kelty coyote 4500. Got it at REI for 99. Good pack, well made, comfy, but works only for short waisted guys. Doesnt have dedicated sleeping bag compartment. On the heavy side. Typically on the higher end and price, you are paying for weight savings, which can be very worthwhile depending on your usage. Fit is important too, try em on.

Probably one of the more important considerations. Only thing I can think of for a winter trip (presumably) in Canada, :p pack extra everything.

If you haven't got a list of stuff you'll be taking, telling us about the kind of trip might help people suggest that stuff, plus packs. Road trip, camping, hiking? I.e., supplies and a pack might be extremely different for 3 days of riding a snowmobile and camping in a tent, vs. 3 days of hiking on foot and bunking in a cabin. Or something. A "jack of all trades" setup can be great, but you'll often end up carrying extra stuff, and in a slightly inefficient way.

But a list of stuff you're planning on taking will probably be enough for people to guess the kind of trip (maybe not enough to guess right, but enough to guess :p).

hey thanks ryan thats more in depth than I was even considering. My needs are just general purpose pack for camping, short road trips, travelling etc. I have an 80 litre right now which takes care of my high capacity needs. Just want something a little handier with more pockets for easy access to my stuff rather than just shoving it in my big 80litre black hole pack on trips when I dont need to be doing that- which TBH is most of them 80L serves me well for 3 month trips but I dont find myself doing too much of that right now. thanks alot for mentioning the alice pack. I do want something in OD green cause this might end up being a hunting pack, and I dont really like the colours of most bags. If i want the thing to be high vis ill put a blaze orange flag on it. really dont like the external frame of the alice, I pretty much want that exact pack in internal frame. hmmmm...

I bought my Maxpedition Vulture II for exactly what you're talking about a couple of years ago, and it's been great. It's a very tough pack, holds lots of stuff but isn't too big, has lots of pockets and slots for organizing, and is a nice quiet color.

I take it to work every day, and on every trip we take. It has a special velcro patch for attaching a Maxpedition holster which keeps my Glock snug, and looks brand new after a lot of being dragged in and out of cars.

IMHO, external frames are a bit better than internal, much tougher, easily repairable, if you manage to blow one out beyond repair, you can make another one fairly easily with sticks and cord. The only prob IMO is that they're ugly, but function before fashion.

Arc'Teryx. Look at the Arrakis or the discontinued Arcus, Naos or RT35. Bombproof & lifetime warranty.

I have an SOC 3-Day Pass and really like it. It's well made, has a bunch of storage options, is really comfortable and is fairly inexpensive.
