I was looking for a knife to cut briars and limbs out of the trail. I was looking at the AJ Russell Field knife and the Hogue fix blade. Any other good ideas? Probably could only afford a production knife.

Becker BK7, without a doubt is the knife I would pick in that size category.

7in of 3/16in 1095 CroVan, a great HT, and some really comfy handles. They'll take a beating and come back asking for more. They're also quite cheap compared to some other blades, so you'd have some money left over for a custom sheath or something like that.

Good luck with whatever you do :).

BK7 is a good value blade. At the higher end, look at the Bark River Bravo 2

a full sized Ka Bar USMC comes to mind.

possibly the best bang-for-buck knife on the market.

I got an Ontario Gen2 SP-51 from a fellow member here. It's a little heavy, with a 1/4" thick blade just under 9" and OAL a little over 14". It's very comfortable to hold and comes with a pretty good sheath. I'm surprised that it's not popular.

The BK5 is nice if you want a choil, and if you like the swept, almost Persian, blade style.

Bk7 all the way to the bank

ESEE 6 or BK7 probably...it's up to you if you're willing to splurge a little more for the ESEE. I would suggest trying to handle a BK7 before buying to see if you like the handle...some people don't like them very much, while others wouldn't want any other handle.
