okay so i'm sure that this question has come up numerous times but i didn't find it. Anyway, i'm looking for a good all around fixed blade outdoors knife. this thing will be used for hunting, hiking, camping etc.. etc.. i've narrowed it down to two knives that i'm most interested in the Esee 4 and the Becker Eskabar. i like the length of the Esee and the warranty and all that, but i couldn't use it as an edc, which would be nice. Now the the eskabar i'm worried that it won't be able to handle some of the tasks needed for camping or hiking, predominantly i don't know how it would do with the batoning of wood. Also i've heard that without using the Esee izula scales that the eskabar feels awkward in the hand. i don't want to para cord wrap it because i don't want to have to deal with the hassle if it gets really wet. However, i wasn't sure if the Esee 4 is going to be too big for me. unfortunately i can't find one locally to look at to make sure i like it before i buy it and it's $70 more than the bk14. Any advice?

(oh yeah, i know Esee has the Esee 3, but i just can't justify dropping a $100 on pretty much the same knife as the bk14, at least i can't justify it to my wife..LOL...)

I'd take an ESSE-6 over the 3 or 4 any day of the week... But it all depends if you want carbon steel or if you need it to be stainless. Check Fallkniven if you want stainless.

I'd think that the Izula compares more accurately to the Eskabar.

But really, a camp knife and an EDC knife are two very different things. If you want a camp knife, then get an ESEE 5 or 6, or a Becker BK2. If you want an EDC knife, get an Eskabar or Izula.

1+

Well said. An EDC knife is no general utility tool for the outdoors. You're either in the city or you are out in the woods, pick the right tool. You may carry the Izula as a back-up, but don't leave without a proper knife.

Izula 2?
My two fav hiking knives are the Esse 4 and Blind Horse bushcrafter. Usually add a sak and sometimes an axe or condor inca knife depending on where I go. For edc and general use I think an Izzy or Izzy 2 would fit your needs.

They are both a little short (IMO) for batonning but both are more than adequately tough to baton through wood of an appropriate diameter. You aren't going to break either doing that. Either would be fine, provided you don't need to baton anything more than 3" or 4" thick.

Either should be fine for hunting but I like shorter blades for that. My BK11 (same blade as the Eskabar) was perfect for the deer I killed this year.

So for your two, I'd give the nod to the ESEE 4 for batonning, the BK14 for hunting and call it a dead tie for about everything else. They have similar warranties and neither company will give you trouble in that regard. The BK14 is quite a bit cheaper.

I'd go with the Becker overall. I love the heck out of my BK11 - use it all the time.
