Can anyone suggest a good all around sharpening stone that is portable, and can be used for both a Kukri (HI AK 18'' & CS LTC) and still be use on serrated folders like SOG Auto clip CS Voyager?
Is there such a thing?

haddo,
i am partial to the hewlette 1-2-3 jewel stix. they are basically a butchers steel shaped diamond stone that has course, medium and fine grits in one package. because the stick is rod shaped (actually sort of a rounded triangle with one grit per side), it hugs the inside curves of the khuk better then a plate or stone. i use a 10" stick for my khuk, but they make a collapsible 5" stick that looks pretty cool. here's a link to the knife center sharpening page, the hewlette sharpeners are at the bottom:

if you are more into the steeling and stroping idea, i would strongly recommend the handamerican products. they specialize in strops and steels. they make a 6" steel (with out handle so it really is just 6" long) that is half grooved and half smooth and it comes with a leather sheath that is pretreated with a permenent stropping compound (once you're done steeing you just slip the sheath on and repeat the motion to strop the edge), so you've got a full edge maintenance package in one item. here's a link to the handamerican steels page...they're awesome:

have fun and i hope this helps,

haddo,
oops, i missed the last bit about the serrated knives...unfortunately i'm not sure if either of the tools i mentioned above would be any good for those. the spyderco sharpmaker seems popular for the serrated knives, but it's not very portable. you might also check the diamond section on the knife center link i sent you, i think there are some thin rod diamond hones that would probably do a good job on the serrated knives...might be a little puny for a khuk tho...you could always give it try.

e.

This is one of those never-ending thread questions.

The opinions are as diverse as the people.

No one product fits them all. In fact, I was posting the other day in a thread about sharpening in the field with a rock off the ground...

That said, get a DMT Diafold Sharpener. They're the best! ;)

Where can I buy one of those sharpening rocks? :D

CS sells a short little stone that fits its serrated knives. Check their catalog or website.

Lansky "dog bone" fer six bux I think.

Carry some sandpaper. You can wrap it around a stick to get into the serrations, and around bigger stick for the plain edges.

You can also try Spyderco's 204 Sharpner. It cames in a portable box and it was designed to deal both with plain and spyderedge knives. Check www.spyderco.com
