Looking for personal experience with the Cold Steel Gunsite II (new handle version). Please let me know the good and bad experiences.

Thanks,
Tom

I have had a pretty good handfull of CS Gunsite (I and II, old-style and new-style) folders, and if you like Tanto blades, they are one of the best. All of the ones I had locked-up tightly, were razor-sharp, held an edge fairly well, and were easy to re-sharpen. The blades are polished, so you don't have the pin-point "rust" problems that you can find with bead-blasted blades. The handles are comfortable, although I'd have liked G-10 scales better than that Zytel material (or whatever it is called).

For the money, they're a good deal. I don't know if they're available in plain edge, but if they are, that'd be my choice. CS serrations are not so good...

Shmackey is right about the Cold Steel serrations not being very good (or sturdy)...UNLESS the knife's only intended purpose is as a self-defense weapon against skin, and light clothing. The Cold Steel serrations DO rip pretty well, and with the Gunsite folders, the serrations are about 40-45% of the blade. If you want a plain-edge, take a look at the 4 and 5 inch Tanto Voyagers. They aren't QUITE a Gunsite, but aren't too far off...

Are the serrations even worth it for a dedicated defense knife? I had a Vaquero large two years ago and can remember the knife wouldn't even cut clean through a paper grocery bag without getting hung up on the serrations. Every cut ended with the bag tearing sideways off the cut path. To me the serrations felt like cheap kitchen knife serrations, and I worried that they would just get hung-up on leather and pull the knife from my hand.
