Good Beginners Bow

So I've been toying around with the idea of trying to get into archery (if only to try something new) but I know nothing about bows and have not shot a "real" bow since before I was a teen many years ago. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good beginners bow. What would be a good draw weight for an adult beginner? I like the idea of a take down bow for ease of carry and I've been looking at the Spectre II Compact Take Down bow and the Martin Jaguar Take Down bow but if anyone has any other recommendations please let me know. I'd like to keep the price under $200 atm.

Compound or recurve - sounds like you want a recurve. I would consider a compound as the learning curve is much shorter and the technology compensates for many misgivings while learning to shoot well.

I picked up a myers keller XI Impact compound on craigslist in the spring, $40 plus 100 for arrows, release, drop down rest and sight. These modern compound bows shoot like guns, if you want a challenge go recurve. I started with the draw weight set around 57lbs, and moved up to 67 after a week. Get something ready to shoot if you can, setup can eat of lot of time.

The only way I will buy a bow is if the store has a range and they let you give them a try before you buy it. You wouldn't buy a car without taking it for a test drive.

If you are looking into it as survival equipment, the Martin will shoot better and last longer. For a BOB the Spectre II or Nomad are better choices if you are looking at compact expendable equipment. You could get the Spectre II, an extra dozen arrows, half a dozen hunting tips, and more for the price of the Martin. The Spetre II has the advantage of inexpensive replacement limbs. You could get the 45# set, which is legal for MOST lower 48 game, then get the 35# or 55# limbs if you need to go down in weight or want to go up in weight.
