One of my uncles spent time in the late 20's/early thirties working for an oil company in Venezuala. My dad, now 25+ years gone, had his Luger pistol and his grey/green water buffalo handled machete. I remember being fascinated by both. No idea where they went.

It wouldn't be the same, but I'd like to make up a similar machete. I recall it being about 28 or 30 inches long, standard pattern blade, and the handle apparently fixed to the blade by rivets.

So where do I find a good quality machete or machete blade worth putting selected water buffalo scales on?

Hi Rusty,

My guess is that your father had a Collins machete with cattle horn scales (they look quite a bit like buff. horn). These can still be found in nice shape(check Ebay). Collins held a well regarded place in Latin America, up too, and including now.

Barring finding an old one, I'd find a G.I. issue Collins (tang stamped US/USA with crown, arm, and hammer), and rescale it:).

HTH:D:).

This probably isn't of much help but they still make the horn handled machetes you are looking for in Ocotlan, Mexico, about 30 miles south of Oaxaca. I was down there in mid-Jan. of this year. More to come on the subject in a future issue of Tactical Knives.

Thank you very kindly, gentlemen.
