I have been looking for a good "large" knife for concealed carry, behind the back. Possibly a Tanto or a Bowie. I can not seem to find any good quality skeletonized knives with decent sheaths. Anyone have any recommendations?

Hello Ed,

While living in Germany last year, I noticed that Puma made a large one-piece knife with a skeletonized handle. I don't know if it's available here in the US, but maybe someone else will post?......

have fun,
Phil Reedy

the rekat sifu would fill the bill perfectly. check it out.

No one will ever guess what that "thing" strapped to your back is until you start to open the mail.

is there still a picture of the MT giant halo around? I remember there was picture of it somewhere.

A Kabar -- paricularly one of the new black rubberized handle models, or the more expensive Next Generation -- would probably fit the bill nicely, provided you don't mind getting the sheath made separately. I'd suggest a good Inside-Waist-Band kydex model from one of the aftermarket sheath makers.

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

I would suggest any of the Cold Steel XLG voyager series or El Hombre knives. I think the El Hombre has a 6" blade. Least ways I think that is the name of it. I just picked up a CS Xlg Tanto and what a hoot. The thing is almost 11.5" long when open. Razor sharp too. Good strong lockback and double grind so it is easy to sharpen. The point pierces like no tomorrow and virtually hides in your pants pocket. The lock on it is getting smoother to open now that I have oiled it a bit and have been cycling it. The Sifu is supposed to be pretty nice too. Haven't had the chance to handle one but the pics looked pretty good. This CS is the first really big pocket folder I have owned. For length anyhow. I like it. Keep'em sharp

I was more in the market for a non-folder since I will be in the water on occasion and it will be difficult to keep the parts clean. I also want a good 14 or better total size.

Hi Ed, I suggest you look at the thread Gaucho has going in the "Knife Review & Testing" section about Jerry Hossom's Millenium Bowie. I'll tell you what, it impressed me! Maybe Mr. Hossom can do a skeletonized handle? I've communicated with him via e-mail about knives & found him to be very willing to discuss what you want in a knife.
Doug.

Ed,

I'm not sure what you mean by a "large knife". If it's the size of the knives I usually carry, then I'd humbly offer the advice that you reconsider skeletonized handles.

As far as sheaths go, I make my own Concealex sheaths to fit a Blade Rigger SB3 rig. I'd be happy to make one for you as well. If you'd like to know what my sheaths are like, I'd be happy to offer references (I make other sheath types as well).

Now, I carried this knife almost every day while we were on vacation last week:
View

It has a 12.5 inch blade, 19 inches overall, and concealed easily under a light coat.

These I carry from time to time as well.
View

11" blades, 17.5 OAL. I can conceal these under the overshirts my wife makes for me.

All the knives above are by Jerry Hossom, who makes the best fighters I've ever handled. His turn around time is also quick, compared to other makers.

Just a thought . . .

Ed,

I'm with Waxes Eloquent(how cool is that name, BTW?)...JERRY HOSSOM. If you want a 'Good Big Knife', then he's the man to see. Even if you just talk to him, what can you lose?

If it absolutely, positively HAS to be a skeletonized handle, and if Jerry Hossom doesn't want to do it, check out the article on Bub Worrell in the last Tactical Knives mag. I think his website is www.knives.com and then click on his name.

Another good FB maker is Newt Livesay. Check out his Company knife model.

You might want to talk to Tom Mayo as well, as he is working in Talonite, excellent for use around water.

I agree- Check with either Bub Worrell or check www.newt.livesay.com & have a look at the Company Knife- named after that "Company" in Langley, VA.
I had Bub Worrell make a knife for me & I can vouch for his skill & he's a super guy to boot. Designed & ordered the knife & made a new friend in the bargain.
happy hunting- you're sure to find something you like if this bunch has anything to do with it.

My point exactly! If you've never had a custom maker do a knife for you according to your own specs, you don't know what you're missing. The cost isn't much more (depends of course on with whom you work) than you'd spend on a couple of production pieces & the experience of having "your" knife in your hand is really something. The process is one of the best parts of the experience- talking to the maker, getting & giving input, choosing styles, materials, etc. That way you get what you want- YOUR knife & there's only ONE of them.
Oops- should be a seperate thread!
