Still on the grind of a search for a new hunting knife, I've decided to come to the Granddaddy of all hunting knife companies and my personal favorite, Buck! So I'm thinking of the 119 or something similar, any suggestions?

I don't hunt, so I can't comment from personal experience but you're going to get so many differing opinions you're still going to be confused. ;);)

Well 121 guide, 124 Frontiersman and the new B&C kalinga are a few that comes to my mind. Yes I know the 124 is a General Purpose knife but it could fill the bill as a hunting knife too!

I cleaned a couple of whitetail with a new 113 Ranger last season - I was very pleased with the knife. I find 3" - 4" (MAX) in a drop point design to be about perfect, and I prefer a fixed blade for skinning and butchering a deer. I like a curved belly on my skinning knife and this blade has it in a 3" drop point design. I was worried the handle may be too small when I bought the knife, but using it proved it to be well designed for comfort in skinning. Bigger game than whitetail may make you consider a longer and wider blade (I want to obtain and use a 103 next season). OH

I've used a 103 skinner since I was a kid. Great skinner. I have a Ergo Hunter but havn't used it. I suspect it's a great skinner too.
The 121 Guide is a great boner.
The Vanguard is a very good general purpose knife.
Oh, don't forget the 110 Folding Hunter is the classic "do it all" knife.

To honest I find the big bowie style knives to be to large for skinning duty. Good for quartering or building a lean to shelter.

I'd go along with this suggestion. DM

I tried the 497 this year. I really liked the heavy belly on the blade. I did not care for the handle though. The sancvik steel kept a great edge. Cutting hide and skinning the blade performed very well. For finer work it was lacking due to the depth of the point being unable to get into tight spots.
