Kershaw Leek comes in just about every color of the rainbow, the Kershaw Blur is a slightly more substantial knife but might stretch your budget a bit depending on the color and blade type you prefer.

Joe Pardue Utilitac II for less than $30, but a great value. Whoops it's a thumbstud flipper w/o assist. I dunno, the spring assist doesn't do much for me anymore. One more thing to break or get out of spec.

Sounds like Kershaw would be a good start. Check out the Hinderer design ones.

Pick a speedsafe Kershaw that you like, that pretty much sums it up for the most part. Just avoid the starter series knives they use a far cheaper steel than most of us would prefer, so another words avoid the really cheap ones with 3cr13 listed in the link DSiflet gave you. Off hand it appears they are the 3 blackwashed $20 knives.

You pretty much answered your own question OP :) Kershaw has assisted opening $50 knives in spades.

My first recommendation would be the Piston.

Kershaw will have the most choices, but CRKT also has some great AO knives in that range. Look at the M4 knives, and others. Gerber will have some AO blades in that range. All 3 make great knives for the money.
