Good but affordable fixed blades

I realized the other day that the fixed blades that I own are either too expensive or too well-liked by myself to really use. I'm afraid I'll damage them. Anyone else ever feel like this? Anyway, I'm thinking about buying myself a couple of affordable but good-quality fixed blades to "use and abuse". Newgraham.com has the Spyderco Vagabond for $24.97 and the Cold Steel True Flight Thrower (but I'm thinking it would make a pretty good utility knife, even though it apparently does not come with a sheath) for $19.97. Any better options for similar money? I'm on a budget and can't spring for two hundred dollar blades like some of you lucky dogs. I'm open to, and will appreciate, any and all suggestions.

cold steel bushman, buck 650 or 655, Ka-Bar fighting knife or next generation fighting knife, Ontario Spec Plus line, Smith & Wesson Search and Rescue, Becker Bk7, I can buy any of these Knives of of Ebay for less than $50.00 in less than 3 weeks time of watching.

What have you got now and what size knife are you looking for? The Vagabond is pretty small. Is that a good size for you?

You might like to look through www.ragweedforge.com for a Scandinavian knife. They have everything from traditionals with wood and other natural handles, to plastic handled Clippers for very little money.

What blades do you own that you are afraid to use? Are they Rare, or expensive Customs that you are planning to resell?

The throwing knife would be a very poor utility knife. It is soft and will not hold an edge.

Beat me to it. I have used my Eriksson Mora 510 for just about everything and I have nothing but good things to say about them. Give them a look.

If you are looking for a utility knife then purchase a utility knife. I own several "Mastercraft Folding Lock-Back Knife" knives and use them daily with 0 maitenance... they also come with a lifetime warranty so they will replace the entire knife + blades 100% free of charge.... I purchase these at Canadian Tire, but I am sure they or something similar can be purchased in the states as well. The best part is, they cost $10, and can be purchased $5 CDN on sale. I abuse these knives daily never maintain or consider even looking after them. I have some that are a couple years old and are still very solid. Blades are solid, cheap, and can be swapped end to end so you'll always have a razor sharp blade on hand.

For an inexpensive user, I like the Mora or a Puukko. Do yourself a favor and try one of these knives.

For a larger or more robust blade, Beckers are great and fairly low in price. But act fast, their getting harder and harder to find and the prices are giong up.

Becker anything, Ka-Bar, Cold Steel Bushman are all good choices

hmm..Mora, pukko, etc

Yo Rat...I have a True Flight that I had my bro Steve sharpen up for me...It isnt comparable to a Busse or my Wererabbit, but it does its job pretty good...And I know a guy that makes sheaths for those! :)

Fully agree with Mora knives...hard to go wrong. Personally I like the Russian Zlatoust brand knives but they are a little higher...maybe $55-75.00 on eBay depending on what you want

Your not alone. I felt this way about my Randall bowie for about two weeks then I went out and used it. :D

Felt the same way about my first Albion sword but I finally whent out and used it what a nice handling sword. :D

For an inexpensive user well the ones that come to mind not in any order, Cold steel, KA-BAR, Ontario and Buck it just depends on what you want.

There are plenty of good knives for the price you are looking at.
WalMart has the Spyderco Native for around $30 , CRKT makes a number of good blades - one that comes to mind is Ryan PlanB , I think those run under $20 , the Ryan PlanB is an excellent EDC sized blade. Moras and Opinels of course... The Bushman , True Flight thrower makes a fantastic beater knife if you are willing to do some work on it. Basically what everyone else has said allready hehehe.... Also the Marbles slipjoints , got one about 2 months ago and it is excellent quality considering it is made in China - sigh... what ya gonna do.

I bought a KBar (Marine Corps style) knife because of its reputation for holding an edge and for being strong. When I used it for a throwing knife, the knife bent at the guard. It straightened out but now I'm looking for something stouter or stronger.
