My Audiovox CDM-135 won't pick up a signal in my office. Are there significant differences in reception between brands/models? Don't need a lot of features, just want to talk.:)

ferguson,
I don't know, either, but if you want to find out, I would suggest trying someone's Nokia from the same location. According to the Wall Street Journal, Nokia rules, while others drool.

I've used Nokias (5190, 6160, 6190, and 8290). None of them worked in my office building, but no one else's does either. Before you get a new phone (unless you're looking for an excuse to upgrade), make sure that 1. another carrier doesn't get signal, 2. a different type of cell phone on the same carrier doesn't get signal, and 3. you actually get strong signal outside your building.

Say what you will about Motorola build quality; my StarTAC beat the crap outta every Nokia I tested it against in the signal department. My Timeport works even better! These phones are pricey and they aren't as sturdy as the Nokia plastic bricks but as far as functionality and usability they totally kick butt. I haven't tested the new Motorola V60c but I would assume comparable performance...I wish it didn't cost $400

Kyocera (I believe formerly Qualcomm) and Motorola are outstanding brands with reputations for solid call reception, innovative technology, and bulletproof phones. I've had both, along with a couple other brands (Nokia is one of them), and believe these two to be the best I've run across.

The most important thing though is the carrier: A good service provider with strong signal is more important than the phone. So I would do what someone else above suggested and find out which carriers have signal and which ones don't and then see if it's indeed a phone issue.

Different phones do have different signal sensitivities, but the bigger determinant will be the service provider.

I use an ericsson R310s. Very rugged outdoor phone with excellent reception! :D

I just got a Kyocera 2235. Great phone, works very well everywhere I've taken it. Has all the bells and whistles except for speakerphone.

Plus, it works with Verizon's Express network. Wireless surfing from my laptop, woohoo! :D
