So far in my collection I have(keep in mind I'm a beginner):
--Buck 285(Bantam BLW Camo Handle, my EDC)
--Victorinox SAK GolfTool(VERY Nifty)
--Small Pocket Knife(Found it, looks like one of those Cutlery Corner knives)
--Gerber Bear Grylls Folding Sheath Knife(Modified it to be more grippy with simple black tape, I won that on a bet so I beat it when I have to)

Is this good for a starter? I'm most likely going to be dropping a visit to SMKW for a budget, yet nice looking dress knife for cheap, Opinel maybe? I've only got $20 maybe after trip expenses, thank you for the veritable wealth of knowledge I will ultimately receive from these forums! Glad to be here!

Hey, I'm new to collecting too. Just started this year. :)

I guess there's no proper definition to a "good start" in knife collecting. You can get many inputs, but like they always say, YMMV. What I like to do is to look for something thy catches my eye and check out what's good and bad about it. If I think I can live with the cons, then I get it. I'm very particular to stain resistance, so blade materials are quite important to me. You can eventually have your own criteria for your grail knife. I hope this addiction wouldn't fade for you!

I currently own:
Leatherman Skeletool CX
Spyderco Endura 4
Kershaw Shallot DLC (currently modding it)
Benchmade 710 D2 satin (currently modding it)

Welcome! Glad you found this forum, great information, and you'll spend lots of money.

Looks like you're missing some fixed blades, if you want to start off cheap, and get a fantastic blade look at Mora Classics. Want to spend more eyeball something like a Becker BK16.

I feel like it's all trial and error. I started a little over a year ago with a Kabar knock off someone gave to me during a hunt and have moved through many phases figuring out what I like and don't like. That is most important, to me. Understanding what you like and don't like. If you like what you have, then it's a good start imo. You'll move onto different things as you learn and research but it'll always be about what you like. Don't let others make decisions for you. I tend to hold onto all of my blades unless someone comes along showing interest, so my collection is too large and mediocre for me to list but I'll list some of my favorites that you might wanna keep an eye out for since most of them are high value budget knives that range between $10 and $30 (excluding the Manix & Nirk).

Spyderco: Manix2 Lightweight Translucent Blue
CRKT: Nirk Tighe - Desert Cruiser
Kershaw: Tremor - Clash - Leek - Grant County - Asset - OSO Sweet
Sanrenmu: 710 - 734
Mora: Companion - Robust
Kabar: Acheron
Buck: 371 - 285 Bantam BLW USA Made
Cold Steel: Roach Belly - GI Tanto
Gerber: Profile

BLW USA Made is a pretty solid knife ain't it?

Indeed it is. I've got the Orange Head Hunterz camo edition and I love it. My gf actually has been favoring it a lot lately so I don't get to use it, but she EDCs it with zero problems. Very high value for a $20 or less knife.

The Buck BLW Bantam was my first knife too. A great little piece although it's been superseded since then, but it still a great place to start this slippery slope.

Most of the time, i feel like i'm a very casual collector, then i run across threads like this and it reminds me that a few years ago, i had NOTHING but one pocket knife. Now, i have a half dozen customs, 6 Bussekin, and another 20 or so assorted blades...

we all start somewhere. Beware the addiction

Good start for a collection, but you don't have any "classic" knives yet. Try a classic. For $20, you can readily get an Opinel or maybe Douk Douk. Something more tactical would be a CRKT Carson. I believe the M16 can be as low as $30. The Swiss Army Pioneer in aluminum scales is about $30 as well.
