For those of you who have despaired over ever owning a real Filipino kris, barong, kampilan, etc. I have to say they are still out there. I was recently at a gun show and as I skimmed by the tables I saw one of those guys who mixes cheap stun guns and throwing stars with pawn shop junk swords setting up. I got closer and saw what appeared to be authentic Filipino weapons at the back of the table. I checked more closely and found a 20" barong, a 14" kris and a 24" kris. The blades and hilts were all about 85 to 90 per cent intact and the sheaths were about 75 to 85 per cent. While keeping the bored look on my face, I asked what they were. The gentleman running the table launched into a long story about how they were "authentic African Zulu fighting swords". I said they looked pretty banged up, but I might be able to do something with them and asked how much he wanted. He said he was thinking of $75 a piece, but he might give me a better deal if I took all of them. We settled on $135 for all three. Based on prices I have seen for similar weapons, I think I rescued at least $500 worth of authentic Filipino swords. The only problem is my jaw keeps cramping from all the grinning!
