Well I'm hoping to have to time get out on the trails this winter and try out some snowshoeing. Anybody around here into it and could recommend a good entry level snowshoe for a broke college student?

What good would gore-texbe in a snowshoe? Pricecap is low. Damn low. But what does gore-tex have to do with this?

Just in case anyone else is confused, he means the wide things you strap to the bottom of your feet to go walking in deep snow. The "traditional" ones looked kind of like tennis rackets.

REI makes some plastic ones that are supposed to be good, but I have no idea what an "economy" set goes for, honestly. I'm interested to see the responses though, as I've been thinking about doing the same thing.

Yans, those look interesting; magnesium frames? Wow... Cheaper than the wally world one's with the wimpy-looking plastic fasteners between the webbing and frame. I'll be suprised if REI has any decent low-cost snowshoes though.

OK here is the scoop on the Mil Issue. They are the balls. They easily support my 300 lb 6,3' frame. I have even straddled rocks with them and they also have the Ice cleats built into the frame. Secondly I also have a pair of Red Feather "modern" frames shoes, and these are not lighter thatn the mag. framed ones, and certainly not as rugged as them. they use aircraft cables and the bindings can be found anywhere..

Try them. I will garenttee to you If ya dont like them I will buy them from you for what you paid.

If you do decide to buy them also put them through the search engine. You most likely will find them cheaper. I got mine for 40 bucks through Cheaper than dirt but they are sold out of them now.

Thes one helluva review, I'll do some more digging, see what else I can find. Cheaper than Dirt, always forget about that place but I bought a ton of stuff through them back in my younger (highschool) days.

The mediums support you? Hows the floation in powder?

The mil ones only come in one size, but have not had any issues yet. As for powder well all shoes sink more in them, but after a few days the powder firms up well.
