Does anybody know of some really good European style sabers besides from cold steel? I’m looking for something a little bit higher up in quality. Also, does anybody know of any books of videos or any other sources besides to one from cold steel?

Thanks.

You might wish to try the following concern up in Canada:
http://www.militaryheritage.com/swords.htm While I understand that at least some of their sabers come from the same supplier as some of Cold Steel's sabers, they have a much, much wider selection. I know of two or three who have bought from them and been quite happy. Remember, however, that they deal with re-enactors and their sabers come unsharpened.

Try custom, too. Tinker Pearce and I are working on a European-style fencing saber that I'm really looking forward to.

Actually going to a custom maker would be best. They are more apt to make something other than the common pieces commerical companies stay with.

We have made Hungarian Szablas and other styles of sabers for collectors, living history reenacting and live steel use.

Madcap-
I hope you post pics and narration when that project comes to fruition!

So are you going for a faily light & agile blade with a lot of curvature then?

It is a very light blade, but the curvature was minimized for the thrust as well as the cut. The back swedge is sharpened for about a third of the blade length, and the grip is canted so that when fully extended in the thrust, the saber's tip is naturally pointing straight out. Macassar ebony grip, 5160 blade ~31"-33", mild steel fittings. That's pretty much what we came up with. Pics and stuff will be here when it's done in December or so.

For the use, besides the one from cold steel, there is the book Cold Steel by Hutton. It is mostly dedicated to its use, and also strategies against different weapons such as the bayonet and french sword (court of side sword).
