i got my bro-in-laws name for x-mas and he wants a good fixed blade skinning knife (no gut hook) in the $40 to $50 range, as i'm more into SD stuff i am not real up on the more skinning oriented knives, have thought about maybe one of the grecos, but would appreciate any suggestions/input/etc, needs a good sheath also, i suppose buck would be a good place to start looking?? he wants a 3.5" to 4" blade, and a good grippy handle, decent sheath, nothing big, no bells/whistles.

thanks,

Byron knives makes a nice skinner with micarta handles made out of 440C full tang with a nice sheath that you can get for $35.00-$45.00.

Case caper (actually has a skinning profile blade) for around $35.00 for the rubber handle version.

Cold steel Pendleton hunter or master hunter...both are wonderful and inexpensive.

best recommendation is the Byron though. Not many people have heard of them, but I have found their knives to be good stuff.

The skinner is the middle knife in the pic

Buck is a great place to look. That's where I'd look. Bucks served our parents and grandparents really well.

Also try:
Ka-Bar
Kershaw
CRKT

.

I would go with the Buck Model 119......$35 at Walmart and several online dealers.....life time warranty and razor sharp out of the box !!

I went through the same process for my bro-in-law and got him the AG Russell Deer Hunter. The CS Master Hunter is nice too, but is probably outside of your price range.

Look at the Buck Vangaurd, sharp 4" blade and rubber like handle that does not get slippery when wet-this is a great skinner.

thanks guys for all the great info, now i gotta decide, the AG russell stuff looks pretty good, will post what i buy,

Sifu,

Give Benchmade's NRA line a good look-see before deciding. They are using 440c and the price is surprisingly reasonable. I believe they have at least one skinner in that line too, IIRC.
