Any recommended field knives for camping?
I have a Buck multi tool but feel that a bigger knife for cutting wood and other stuff might come in use (gutting fish plus any future use in hunting or scuba diving).
I heard Glock's were good and cheap?
Gerbers, Beckers, SOG Seal pup?

Budget absolute max about $100 but would prefer $75 or less than $50.
Some of the stuff available for $100 I have heard on review sites can be gotten hold of for around $30 or so...

I don't know if you're only interested in a fixed blade, but I see that you mention diving etc. In the summer I'm always swimming and fishing and I carry a stainless handle VG10 endura. Never had a problem with rust, and it's stout enough to handle pretty much everything yet thin enough for slicing food and cleaning fish. Check it out! I think they're like 60-70 bucks. Also the H1 series are built for Salt water. Hope that helps.

+1 mora, it kinda makes you question buying expensive blades.

If your looking for a big knife look at becker.

Okay $100?

Mora 'Scout', it's got sandvic stainless witch holds an edge pretty well while still being pretty corriosian resistant. I'd get it in a bright color for obvious reasons if you want to dive with it. Also, it has a gaurd so your fingers don't slip when you dress game or fish. It's got a thin 4" blade with a scandinavian grind so it's a great wood carver. Price is about $13.

A pic of the Mora Scout knife:

Another idea is the Esee knives DpX HEST. Here's a pic:

It has 3/16" thick blade so it can baton smaller stuff with busting, wouldn't recommend batoning with the mora. It has a hollow handle so you put last ditch suvival items, cash, stick of gum etc. That spiked pommel I imagine would would well for prying stuff while diving. It's almost a fully flat ground blade so it cuts well too. Comes with a kydex sheath and molle clips so you lashe it to yourself or it attaches to any molle. For diving though you'd have to take care of this blade because it's a highcarbon steel so it'll rust, just wipe it down after use and your set. Price is about $90.

Hopes this helps. If you had one of those two paired up with a machete or a hatchet you'd be set for pretty much everything.

ESEE/RAT RC-4; you can baton wood with it. It scored 4 blades at Knife Tests website with videos of outrageous abuse. Peels an apple too. If you want to gut fish it will work fine. Ir you want to filet them it would need to be re-profiled to a finer edge. :)

+1 Mora

or

Queen Premium Drop Point Hunter in D2 with Oak handles for about $40
Full tang well balance knife with a 3 1/2" blade

I'll look into all those - thanks.

Next question then :)
If the mora is only $13 and is good for gutting and carving (presumably it will be better than my Buck penkife?), should I get a chea hatchet instead to cut/baton wood?
It's an extra bit of kit to carry while canoe camping but it might work better at chopping wood into smaller bits than a knife?

I would look at the HEST, ESEE3, ESEE4, or Fallkniven F1. If you shop around you can find all of them below your limit. I've heard good things about the Mora too, but I prefer knives with a full tang for additional strength and peace of mind.

As far as a hatchet is concerned, I would look buy a Gerber camp hatchet. I've heard great things about them and they go for ~$35

Moras are dang good knives for the money. That and a little Gerber hatchet or folding saw you should be good to go.

Yep, they work well.

Weight of a hatchet/big knife won't be that different, and I'll pick a hatchet any day over a knife for any woodcutting other than whittling.

This one or the camp axe: both look reasonable:
Gerber 45912 Back Axe
Gerber 45905 Camp Axe
Gerber Gator Combo Axe II

Also, how will a Buck X tract multi tool compare to something like the mora?
