I have $75 from a Christmas gift to spend on steel. Would this be a good first axe?

I know it is no GB but Wetterlings is good right??

It's a Wetterlings SAW20H...Bensbackwoods calls it a 19" Bushcraft axe...sounds like a great addition to the shed. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

It'll do just fine. It's a perfect choice at that price point.

a 30 dollar ax from the hardware store works just as well. found an ax head in the woods 25 years ago cleaned it up, still has the same hickory handle i made for it at the time, always wrap copper wire around the handle below the head so you dont damage the handle if you miss.

I'm thinking of picking up a Wetterlings as well. I'm looking at the smaller ones though. I've only heard good things about them.

I have a larger Wetterlings, and I quite like it.

And yours, having been made after the take-over by GB, will be even better than mine is...

As I understand it, Wetterlings was not technically taken over by GB. The article that I read indicated that the same individual owns both companies but has kept them distinct entities.

I mis-spoke, the same owner, but not a subsidiary... But, by all accounts, since the new owner, who also owns GB, quality has improved, markedly.

done deal gents. Thanks for the go ahead :)

Now im going to bed...0300 here...damn...havent been up this long in quite some time.

I've heard quite a few people say that the Wetterlings quality has improved (as Marion notes). Assuming that's true, I think you're smart to buy before the price climbs any further in recognition of that improvement. Now may be the best time to capture that quality improvement without paying prices that approach GB.

Have fun with it!

The Wetterling would be more than a good first axe, it should last you for as long as you need it. I have a couple of Wetterlings and have never been disappointed in either.

Wetterlings have a Swedish steel ax head made right down the same street as one of "big name boys"...all American hickory handle. Not only a good first ax but a good last ax unless you're of the discrimenating type and you've got to 'kick it up a notch'.

Get her dude !
It's great - I have the skinnig axe which is pretty much the same - it's the best camping tool I've ever used !

You can't spend a better 30 dollars on an axe. Swedes know forest tools like nobody's business.

had to do some testing took my ax over the inlaws for thanksgiving, for some testing againt a wetterling, my ax has a 7.5 in long head with a 4.5 in cutting edge 35 inches long overall the inlaws wetterling has a head 7.5 long 4 inch cutting edge and 32 inches overall , tested splitting, limbing and felling, cut a little with each ax felling my ax cut a bit easier dont know if its the longer handle or edge profile my cheap ax was also sharper at the end of cutting, splitting, again used oak, slabed chunks off around the out side with the grain my ax split easier with not much sticking the wetterling took more force with much more sticking in the wood. will try some more brands when i get a chance and get a camera to take pics.
