Good First Pinchable Multi-Blade?

Hi All,

Been looking for the answer to this on the forum and haven't found it, so was hoping to get some input from you.

I have been involved in the hobby for a while now, but have been wary to leave the safe waters of single-blades as I pinch, aka pluck, the blades open.

One of the forum knives is on it's way to me now, I believe a 2012 as it's a wharncliffe trapper on a GEC #74 frame, so going to give that a try.

But, I just love the look of multi-blades and the variety of them, so does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!

Also, if I missed a thread on this, feel free to point me that way and my apologies.

Are you wanting to be able to pinch open all the blades? If so that my be a challenge.

The Case Medium Stockman with the round bolsters has a Sheepsfoot that is pinchable. It sits really high and proud. I can't remember the pattern number right now, and I don't have mine handy.

I've got two with a pinchable blade: a Case punch stockman (3318PU) and a 2012 Queen City half congress. In both cases, it is a sheepsfoot blade that I can punch open.

It seems to me that this is what the OP is in implying. If so, I agree. That's gonna be a tricky one.

The only pattern that I can think of is maybe some of the Muskrat patterns. On some of those patterns the high points of the two blades straggle each other leaving just enough room to pinch each blade open. This Canal Street Muskrat for example. I can pinch open either blade but it's not the easiest thing to do. I do enjoy a pinchable blade but on this particular knife I find it much easier to use the nail nick.

And some great insights all around, I do agree that it is a steep challenge.

I guess secondarily I should ask a question that might have been answered elsewhere. But, what do you all think is the best "starter" multi-blade? For one blade pinchable and the others with looser springs, what do you guys suggest?

Thanks!

I'm with Tylosaurus. The Case 318 pattern would appear to fit the bill for you. As I've posted elsewhere since becoming a member in the last week, I've got a real soft spot for that particular pattern. It's the first 'real' pocketknife I ever had and I've been carrying one for at least 30 years. As someone else noted on this thread, the sheepsfoot blade stands pretty proud of the other blades --in part because the California clip blade used on this pattern has no hump in it and sits a lot lower than other types of clip blades. As a result, you can get a good grip from both sides and open at least the sheepsfoot blade one-handed, which is mighty handy in case you're working under a car or something and have only one hand free. The good thing about this pattern is that Case offers it in about every color/handle material they sell, so Ive been able to pick it up in a lot of different bone and synthetic handle colors and types, including a carbon fiber version I really like, and a G-10/micarta version I ordered a couple days ago. If you're willing to use a single-blade knife, the Sodbuster patterns will fit the bill, too. However, I've found the springs are too tight on the Case Sodbuster Jr's to allow for 'pinch' operation, but Queen's version of the Sodbuster, called a Country Cousin, allows for one-handed operation, and the fit and finish on that knife is really nice for the price.
