I want a medium to large fixed blade that will stand up to alot of abuse. I was looking at a BKT, but I don't know what to get or if there is anything better. I like the Ka-Bars, but I have heard there are better knife designs out there for general outdoor/utility use. I can't afford any Busses or Rangers rite now, I would like to stay within a $60 dollar price range, even lower would be nice, but maybe for Christmas. Also, where is the best place to get the knives you reccomend? Thanks for any help I get.

I second a Becker. Check the secondary market. I got my BK9 used for 35 bucks shipped on another forum just several weeks ago. I already have a few Rangers but couldn't pass up the deal.

How tough are the Beckers? They don't have to be like tanks or anything, but I want it to stand up to some light to medium chopping, and possibly being thrown, it may be also used as a wedge to split small logs for the fireplace. How tough is the coating? What Becker do you reccomend? What about a Ka-Bar or other type of utility knife? The only complaint I have about the Ka-Bar short I have is that the grind it too obtuse for my Sharpmaker or Lansky, it just scratches the coating, (I don't know if the full size Ka-Bars are like that) are the Beckers like that? Any suggestions on how to fix my Ka-Bar short problem?

The Beckers are plenty tough to baton or chop with. However, I personally would not throw one.

Coating on the Beckers is very tough.

A BK9 would suit your purposes really well.
BK7 is a great knife too, though perhaps not as well suited to chopping.

The BK9 is a big hunk of excellent & proven steel that you can shave with.
In your price range.
And they are disappearing quickly.
