just got my new special project catalog on, and after everything i had read here and noticing the switch to 420 i was wondering if cold steel knives were even worth bothering with. I really like some of thier fixed blades, SRK, recon tanto, ect ect. im wanting imput as to knives of similar price and of good quality.

Yes, CS has good knives, and I don't think most of their fixed blades have switched over. Read the catalog carefully, there's lots of good stuff in there.

Other companies that are in the same price range, with better materials are:

Buck
Kershaw
Outdoor Edge

These are the ones that I know and like, sre there are many more.

A few more that haven't been emntioned:

-Fallkniven
-Bark River Knife & Tool
-Spyderco
-Ontario
-Benchmade

Hope that helps,

-John

Their Carbon V bladed knives are good (like the SRK, Recon Tanto, etc.). However the steel choices for various models seems almost arbitrary. Before I discouunt their 420 sub-zero quench I'd like to read an objective review of it's performance. Their designs do have a timeless appeal. Just four random thoughts.

I know Cold Steel is using the 420 in some of the new fixed blades, lie the ones with the all rubber handles/guards.

Are they changing all of thier stainless knives (stainless trailmaster, Tantos and Votagers) to 420 or just certain models?
