Hey guys, im looking to get a good folder knife. It will be used as an all around general purpose carry knife. I dont want anything super expensive. I was looking at the Cold Steel Recon knives and was wondering what people thought about these knives. I have purchased Cold Steel knives in the past and was happy with the quality. Anyways, do you recomend the cold steel recon or do you recomend something else in the same price range (around $60 range)? Thanks for any and all help!

For around $60? How about a SOG Trident or Flash II. I know they "retail for more, but if you look around the net you can find them for considerably less. Also, if yo look around, you can find the aluminum handled version of Kershaw's Ken Onion speed bump. Not the more expensive Spec bump with the G10 handle and S30V blade, but still an overall solid knife. I picked one up just to have around for about $50 on ebay earlier this year. Really though, it's all about what feels good in YOUR hand and YOUR pocket. Good luck with the search.

Cheers,
Jon:)

Welcome to Bladeforums.

So since you think the Recon 1 is suitable, I think you are looking for:
Folder
4" blade
Pocket clip
General purpose
But you need it for ~$60 or less.

You might look at the
Cold Steel Large Voyager 4" blade VG1
Cold Steel Ultimate hunter 3.5" blade VG1
Benchmade Vex. It has a 3 1/4" blade. Chinese AUS8
KaBar Large Dozier 3.6" blade AUS8

All are $60 or less and are well built knives. The Recon has a blade of 440A, which does not have the best edge retension characteristics. All of the above knives have steel with better edge retension than that of AUS8.

Cold Steel is not very popular with a lot of folks here because of personality quirks of the company owner. But the knives are usually well built, which is mostly what matters to me.

Get Byrd Cara Cara. (and preferably all stainless steel version. I bought G-10, SS and all black SS Cara Caras and Crosbill and the "plain" stainless versions seem to me to be of better quality).

Here's a link to one of the best deals in the wild world of knives....

The Alaskan Guide Buck 110.
You get a beautiful time proven classic, with S30V blade-steel (heat treated by the well respected Mr. Bos no less), and the price is just alittle more than your $60.00 dollar mark.

It's one of my favorite knives....

Third for the 110 AG.

Been carrying mine for a few weeks now and it's probably the best deal for a larger folder going. Little big for pocket carry, but getting used to it.:)

For $60 I'd get:

Spyderco Endura 4 Wave, D'Allara drop point
Benchmade Griptilian/Mini Grip
Kershaw Leek, ET (doesn't get much credit, but I love the design)
Leatherman Wave
Buck 110

I think Cold Steel is a good quality for the $ in this price range, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

I thought the Recon was AUS8 ?

I think a Spyderco Endura 4 is the way to go. For the money, it is hard to think of a better general use folder.

That S30V 110 looks sweet BTW!

the recon looks like a solid deal.

I have the Recon and the Voyager as well as the Gunsite II. I really like them all. I also have the Cabelas Buck 110. I like the knife very much but its like carring a brick on your belt. I usually carry the Kershaw Blackout. Last week I looked at a Gerber fast draw which seamed like a very well made cheaper knife and very light.
