Would like to get a knife or two for my father in law. He has couple of crap ones that don't say manufacture or anything. He likes the style like solo or cadet, kinda smaller an lighter. Was thinking about a buck 7461 which I think is a buck 303 (older trio?) USA made with rose handles. Id prefer wood handles and USA made. Just started loking so haven't seen if the solo is USA made. Am I confused or are they making a china version and a USA made at the same time? Any thoughts?

The 303 Cadet is made in the USA and comes in a wood handled/brass bolster version as well as the traditional black, sawcut Valox handled version (stainless bolsters). OH

Pretty easy to separate USA & China slip joints. The 'general' rule is....
301 to 310 models are USA
371 to 389 models are China
There is some cross over in styles.....for example
301 USA Stockman ~ 371 China Stockman
303 USA Cadet ~ 373 China Trio

From tiny to large, available in black or rosewood, I recommend these USA models

305 2 blade - Lancer
309 2 blade - Companion
303 3 blade - Cadet
302 1 blade - Solitaire
301 3 blade - Stockman

The 305, 309 and 302 have apparently been discontinued for 2018, so you picked a good time to purchase one of these.

The 302 is one of my all time favorite knives.

For father's day last year I bought my father this gorgeous trio in rosewood to provide him 3 very different distinct options to edc.
(He too prefers smaller lighter knives and I can recommend all 3 with confidence).

Vantage Avid (small) - gives him a modern knife with a nice deep pocket clip.
503 - gives him a classic style single blade lockback
301 - gives him a 3 blade slipjoint
