So I got my Sure Flight Thrower 1055 Carbon 12" in the mail today and I can't really get them to stick. I'm trying out different holding methods and have been holding it from the tip of the knife on either the tip or butt end of them and have been getting mixed results. Most of the time they bounce off no matter what and I think they are spinning too much. Do you guys hold it more towards the middle of the knife? I havn't tried doing that yet. Also, when do you release the knife? Some say release it at the top of your throw, some say throw it when its pointing right at the target. im confused!

im also very new to throwing (actually ive never thrown a specificly "throwing" knife) but I think you hold it at the end of the handle closest to the blade and you release halfway between your sloulder and the target (i read that somewhere) I suggest that one book "combat knife throwing" it teaches the no spin technique but thats like master thrower stuff, so good luck and happy throwing

Choice of target makes a big difference.

I throw into an archery target, which is very forgiving. I recently threw at a telephone pole, and it was bouncing most of my throws.

My Cold Steel knives are lightly wrapped in athletic tape. I hold them like so:

with the tip of my first finger at the balance point.

the sequel is about posture and release:

Ralph Thorn's method is very natural and with practice, is probably the easiest. No leather pants necessary. ;)

It's just like learning to throw a ball. Were you good when you first learned?? Did you get better with tons of practice? Or golf. Or any other skill that you have to master.

Keep at it. After about a million throws, you'll get the hang of it. (I'm up to about 10K throws - still stink. LOL)

If you keep hitting with the butt try moving forward or back a bit until you find the right distance for the way you throw.

I throw it like a baseball; hold it by the handle in my right hand, swing overhand, take a step forward with my left foot and release towards the target. I have to find my distance, so the knife is turning once. Keep that distance, repeat as necessary, until I have it. After a million times, I back up and try it so that the blade takes two turns. Repeat a million times as necessary :D

For targets, I like to find a slab of a tree trunk 2-3 feet in diameter. I'm throwing into the end grain, it sticks better than the side of a tree. Watch where road crews are taking down old trees, they might give you a slab.

when do you release the knife?
if you throw it with a spin then release the knife when your hand parallel to the ground. The rule of thumb is to draw a line 12 feet from the target, if you strike with the butt up then move half-foot closer and it's the butt down then half-foot further. Nothing fancy, really, you should be fine after a hundred throws
