over my winter break, the family and I are going back to Kuaui for a well deserved break, and of course i thought, hey! why not bring a good pocket knife!

so if possible id like some suggestions of some good knives to pack

Im already bringing a SAK Tinker

so here are my parameters

Hawaii Legal

sub 3 inch folder

rather rust resistant

preferably all screw construction for easy cleaning

sub $60

Danke!

The Spyderco Salt 1 seems a natural choice for Hawaii, but mine is 3 1/32 inches. H1 steel is impervious to rust and salt water. Don't know if you'd get busted for an extra 1/32" but I think it'd be the knife I carried. Maybe you can carry an apple along with you and say the knife is for food preparation. Have fun on your trip.

Basically all folding knives are legal carry in Hawaii, except autos/butterfly.
just pack whatever you have.

Kuaui is awesome man! Been there 3 times, great place! Um id also suggest a salt 1, that way you can clip it to your trunks and take it where you go, even in the beautiful water:thumbup:

I was in Kauai last Christmas with family and I brought along a couple of Spyderco Salts. I didn't read the law the way you did, and didn't seem to see a length requirement so I brought along a salt I and a Pacific Salt.

The Pacific Salt lived IWB of my boardshorts (rarely wore anything else) the entire time, and not one bit of rust. I was in the water for hours each day. Stayed secure and was great. I would go with the extra length of the pac salt, as I really liked it (great for food prep too).

You can score them on ebay for about that price. You're gonna have a blast. Be sure to go snorkeling (I loved Tunnels, if you're a strong swimmer try to make your way to the outer reef) Also Pali Ke Kua beach up by princeville had sea turtles every time we went, pick up the snorkel Kauai book if you don't have it already.

Hit me an email if you've got any questions or want any more of my recommendations.

It's gonna be a trip you never forget.

before the writers strike a few years back my family went every year for hanukah, now we have enough miles that we can go for free so money is not an object of worry

I bought a CRK&T M16-10KZ in Kauai last spring once I landed there. Walmart had 'em for less than $20. I carried it for a week then gifted it to an LEO at the airport before I left (I didn't have any checked luggage). It was a great little knife for cutting up fruit, prying off bottle caps, and making me feel a little safer as a tourist.

When you are going to HI you have to take a Ken Onion design.... I say take a Leek. Nice little all around blade, and, you won't be out an arm and a leg if something happens to it.

While it's nice to support the local guy, I really think that something in H1 by spyderco is the way to go. It's essentially what these blades were built for.

Clip it in your waistband and go, you'll forget it's there until you need it.

I went to Kauai this past August. What a beautiful place!

I only took a Vic Climber. I didn't want to bring too expensive of a knife just in case of baggage theft. The SAK was plenty it turns out.

Next time I will take my Kershaw Skyline or Buck Vantage Pro and my Vic Spirit multi-tool also. Or maybe my Vic One Hand Trekker.
