Just about about every thanksgiving my family and I go deer hunting on my mother's farm in the Piedmont of North Carolina. This year there were three men and one boy down in the woods. Each of us got a deer, which is excellent. But this year was special because my young nephew, Tyler, got his first deer, and it was an excellent buck. This is him, with his father Collin.

It finally quit raining, the fog had lifted, this buck stepped out and the boy has a memory that I hope will last his lifetime.

No such thing as a bad hunt but there are great hunts and a smile like that on a young man's face is what makes a great hunt.

How bad was he shaking afterward and how many times did he tell the story? I can almost hear it....

One question, why's his face clean? ;)

He wasn't shaking that I noticed by the time I had walked over. He was happy, but he was calm. This is the first time he has ever fired at a deer. When I was a boy I missed my first shot at a buck due to "buck fever", I was too far away for my skill level at the time and I was shaking too much, and I missed. He took his time and got off a good shot that dropped the deer in its tracks, which pleases me to no end. The rifle is his own 30-30 lever action.

His received the traditional "cheek smear". His face is clean in the picture, I suspect, because his mother must have cleaned him off. Girls ...
