I'm looking for a sturdy built fixed blade that doesn't carry a huge price tag. I haven't been hunting yet, so I'm not sure what features I'm looking for. I own a Buck Special and it seems like a decent knife. I've also looked at the cold steel recon knives.
I'd like the knife to have more of the recon's tactical look to it, versus a more traditional looking wood handle. That's another point, the buck has a very slick handle, I kinda like the kraton or whatever it is handle on the recon. Any thoughts would be appriciated. Also I think I'll need a guthook of some sort as well. I looked at the buck and the swith and wessen one. Any thoughts?

Thx

go for a buck vanguard in kraton, you can also get it in a guthook model, its fairly decent priced and will do a nice job. Smith & Wesson...uhhhhhh...thats up to you, me I would'nt own one, just my humble opinion though.

Why not try a Cold Steel Master Hunter with a gut hook? You said you liked Kraton.

They come in two steel choices, AUS 8 and Carbon V. I have the one in Carbon V, and I think you would like it better if you don't mind staining. It is not a stain resistant steel.

The Master Hunter is a little large for most of the game I kill, such as deer, but it is a good knife and a decent value.

Listen to Coonskinner. It is hard to beat a Master Hunter in Carbon V steel for the price. I think you can get one for about $50, maybe less if you do some careful shopping.

Any of the Marbles made with 52100 cryo treated steel. The 2002 models changed to some type of chromium steel and the jury is still out on their performance.

The older Marbles are amazing for edge holding and ease of sharpening.

My all time favorite is the Schrade Sharpfinger. Excellent design. It has a fine tip that works great on small game and a gentle sweep that makes skinning big game a breeze. The sheath isn't the greatest, but you can get an after market sheath for it. The knife can still be had for around $20.

I'll second the Shrarpfinger.
Before I found the forums, the Sharpfinger and my little Buck FB (102? Woodsman? the smallest traditional FB) were the two that I'd reach for. The Buck was a gift, or I would've been fine with the Sharpfinger.

If you want stainless go for the Buck, better sheath too.

Wont go wrong with either of these two.

Then I found the forums and Bob Dozier
And things haven't been the same ;)

Another vote for the CS Master Hunter in Carbon V. As stated it will oxidize very quickly.(Not necessarily rust but will darken and stain) This is easily removed with Flitz metal polish and a rag. The steel holds a good edge. I don't like sheath however.

Hmmmmmm.....some familiar names here. Schrade Sharpfinger and its drop point kin, CS Carbon V Master Hunter....my only complaint is the Schrade sheath, but that's easily remedied. Fine small game and deer hunting blades.
