I have been searching on the web for a good hunting knife for around 50 bucks
so iam going hunting with my uncle he has a old gerber m2 steel knife that he can shave with after skinning a 700 pound elk in new mex.
iam thinking the Lone Wolf Drop Point Hunter that made out of n680 which i never heard but i heard of n690
do you think i should just make a knife out of some planer blade which are also hss
this is going to be my first time hunting i think it should me fixed blade

I'd suggest looking at Kabar knives. The Kabar combat/utility knife is a good one for around $60, and the Becker BK2 is about $60 also, and is another great knife!

If you want to get a fantastic hunting knife for field dressing big game, check out the Havalon Piranta. That knife is looked upon highly by hunters around the world and is a favorite up in Alaska. Its razor sharp, and when the blade gets dull you toss it out and replace it with another blade. Spare blades are cheap. You'll never have to worry about a dull blade. You can get the knife for around $30. Your uncle and hunting buddies will also want to get one when they see it, I can just about guarantee it. Check out knifecenter.com and other suppliers to find one. I like the version in bright orange - you can find it if you drop it in the woods.

If you wanted to get a more traditional type knife, you might want to try out a Buck Vanguard. Its right around your $50 price, maybe a few dollars more, but not much more. Its a fixed blade knife. I prefer the model without the guthook, which I think just gets in the way.

Hunting knives are different than other types. They often have a lot of 'belly' which helps when field dressing big game. Military knives are different in purpose & design and don't work as well for big game hunting tasks. Often their double guards get in the way, and their blades are too long for field dressing tasks. Also, big, thick and heavy knives are of little use for typical tasks that you do while big game hunting. They don't handle well when doing various jobs and just weigh you down.

Green River Knives are inexpensive and have been popular hunting knives for ages:

Last time I checked you could buy one of the Benchmade Rant models in 440C online for about $50. 440C won't hold an edge nearly as well as your uncle's M2 blade, but it will hold an edge far longer than 1095. And you did say you wanted a hunting knife rather than a general outdoors knife. For a hunting knife, edge retention is what you crave most.

The Benchmade Rant looks like a great hunting knife! The BK2 is too big imo, could make due but it's not ideal. I'll throw my recommendation in for these two:

Buck Ranger Skinner

Buck Vanguard

The Green River and Old Hickory knives are inexpensive but they will need to be sharpened several times while field dressing and skinning a large elk. Plus they don't come with sheaths. I think the Queen D2 will hold its edge as good or better than the others mentioned.

Do the Queen knives come dull from the factory ? They used to take some work on their D2 knives to get in decent shape, at least in their slip joint folders. But I havent looked at them for awhile.

Here's a good discussion by hardcore Alaskan hunters for the original poster. The boys up there are more concerned with tools that get the job done versus 'purty', though there's nothing wrong with that either. Have fun with whatever you choose:

I don't really have a recommendation for a hunting/skinning blade, as I really have no experience there.

But I will say that I would not recommend the BK2 for that particular use case. I love the BK2, but its a bit hefty for a skinning knife. For a do everything woods knife, I'll recommend it all day, as a hunter, not so much.

Good luck man :).

i love my bk2 the feel is amazing i would recomend it:D

but have not tryed it to hunting...

You won't be happy if you buy a bigger knife (BK2) specifically for hunting. I have a variety of knives and the best ones that I've found for hunting are the ones that are sharp and easily maneuverable. The good old Buck 110 is a great all around knife for hunting and camping and the Mora knives actually do pretty darn well too.

What was I thinking with that Old Hickory crap? I wish I could take it back and say IZULA.

I think that will cover all of your realistic hunting and outdoor needs.

Dang... that's almost a steal! Or should I say "steel"? :p

yeah, i'm contemplating getting one for the hell of it. that knife is ground pretty thin and with a D2 blade in the 60-62 HRC range, i doubt he'll find a better skinner/slicer in his price range.
