Anyone ever bought a knife that you thought you would put to good use only to never take it off the shelf? I have quite a few that might eventually get listed for trade.

Yes, but I traded several really nice ones, that were NIB, in order to get a more expensive (better?) knife. It might be a good way, because I "never" would have spent that much cash money for just one production knife. Hope I was right. It hasn't come in the mail yet...
Another poster said, a few days or a week ago, that many of us end up spending a bunch of money for a bunch of so-so knives, and then finally work our way up to the "hotter" knives that are all the rave these days.
And, of course, there are lots of us that are quite content with EDC's that don't cost as much as the farm.

I purchased an older Seki City SOG Seal Pup a few years back and while I've carried it on a few occasions it mostly collects dust now seeing as I've aquired different taste in knives and find the blade geometry to be less than desireabble.

I'm not big into collecting. I don't have anything that if lost overboard or broken that I would lose sleep over. I never planned on buying anything that I would not use. I have some that I'm not interested in. I regularly carry a BM mini grip or mini barrage. I also get a lot of use from SAK helmsman and Spyderco serrated mariner.

These others though are some of what some might consider the lower end of the spectrum ( SOG, Cold Steel, CRKT). I just decided that I won't ever use them. I'll probably carry them in the seabag and sell them off eventually.

All the friggin' time.

When I notice that some of my knives aren't getting used, I sell them off. I've been selling off the majority of my 'collection' lately because I found myself accumulating way too many knives that didn't see enough use. Gonna see if I can get it down to a half-dozen or so total this time.

I have the old versions of the K-Bar Warthog and Camp Knife that are still on the shelf. I'll get around to using them one of these days.

i own several knives , Case, Kershaw, Schrade, SOG, Buck, Rough Riders etc. Most sit on shelves as my cherished collection. My current passion is Case knvies. I have done some selling/trading to buy yet another Case knive. My problem is that every knive in my collection has a story. I have an inventory of all of my knives. Each brings back a memory of where and how it was purchased. It is hard at times to part with the any of the knives I own.

There's not even enough room in this text box to list them all. Most recently, I bought an Al Mar Shiva with brown micarta handle that I had no business spending buko bucks on. It's an absolutely fantastic knife, but but not the best choice as my hunting blade.

If you're serious about giving your collection some direction, you might start with the knives you use most. Each knife has strengths, but also certain limitations, or perhaps some details of each knife that you wish were different. From there, you could look for other knives that address these limitations.

Although, that next knife is hard to resist. So shiny.....

I've done this so many times its ridiculous, I'll see a knife and haft to have it then by the time it comes in the mail i want something else. My wife has issued a new law in my household though, If I don't use it it has to go, so I bought a gold membership and anything I won't carry either gets sold or traded.

Surely we've all done this.

I was collecting knives before I was collecting other things such as watches and I find it odd that I've bought a lot of knives for various reasons but with no intention of ever using them. In the realm of collecting watches, if a person didn't wear every one of their watches then they would sell the ones that they didn't wear and buy another. I do have a lot of folding knives that I've bought with the intention of using them, and I've bought some with specific uses in mind but haven't had an opportunity to use them for that yet.

Not often, but occassionally I get one that doesn't work for me. Last and worst one was a Busse Skinny Ash. I had been cruising the Busse section and decided i needed a piece of that magical Infi for myself. I thought maybe the Skinny ash was just the ticket for a good all around camp knife, saved my money, and ordered one. (this was five or more years ago.)

It is too small and uncomfortable to use as a dedicated chopper. (Gave me blisters Pronto.) Too big for cleaning deer. I tried but it seemed kinda silly to change to the Busse when it came to quartering the deer. Just meant I needed to clean two knives instead of one. I had other smaller and much cheaper blades that did anything I wanted better/easier.

I threw the Busse in my BOB where it sits. I occasionally strap it on when walking in the woods, but mostly just so I don't feel like a complete idiot for spending over three hundred dollars on a knife I realy don't have a need or desire for. I plan to keep it for two reasons. One: it is my only Busse knife, I doubt I'll ever buy another; and Two: to remind myself to not make another expensive a$$ mistake.

Grizz

A lot of of time I have knives the sit on my shelf and end up not using because they just don't appeal to me.

This doesn't bother me because they become items I can use for trade to get knives I currently desire.
