Good idea or not?

I've been thinking about getting the G10 scales on my camo PM2 cerakoted in safety orange lately. Anyone here ever try this?

A highly-esteemed cerakote applicator tells me that G10 knife scales are something he does quite frequently with good results. Apparently, the material adheres to G10 surprisingly well.

I do not doubt his veracity. He's the go-to guy for cerakoting guns, lights, knives, etc. my concern would be how well the material STAYS on the knife if subjected to regular wear/tear and occasional drops.

Cerakote is tough. I have a cerakoted hds flashlight, and it has shown very little wear--granted, I've never dropped it onto concrete (knock on wood!).

G-10 is tough stuff. But, it's relatively soft compared to the brittle cerakote finish that I'm thinking of putting over it. I don't see it standing up to well to a 4 foot drop onto concrete.

Any feedback?

Thanks!

No. If you are merely trying to achieve a color, you might as well seek out custom scales.

You could search up the orange sprint run if you want to get an idea. But I gotta agree, just get a pair of orange scales, you can always swap back to camo.

Yeah. Better to get scales that are orange throughout rather than just on the surface, I suppose. Guess I'll just wait for the next CS sprint....

+1 Don't coat your current scales, just get a custom set. They come up here in the exchange from time to time, or you can have some made for you.

The problem is that there are very few folks who will touch a set of PM2 scales (especially when you want peel-ply surface texture) as nested scales are a pain in the ass to make.

I've asked a few folks on here about a set of peel-ply toxic green PM2 scales and I rarely get an enthusiastic answer - I presume that's because of the difficulty in getting everything right on a set of scales in the first place, and then adding nesting and Peel-ply to that equation.

I looked at the website for this particular coater, and he's done quite a few Spydies. Saw a Manix 2 that had the blade coated black and the scales were coated with safety orange Cerakote. It looked pretty stinkin' good!

No nested liners on the Manix 2 though, so I'm sure it's easier to accommodate the tolerances. Still . . .

G10 + Cerakote + asphalt just CAN'T end well.

I'm off to YouTube to see if I can find others who have ventured down this road already. I'll report back!

Sorry - I was speaking more from the standpoint of scale-makers and not coaters (I'm dangerously close to having a set of PM2 scales duracoated in Lime/Toxic Green myself as a result of the lack of custom scales out there).

Every Cerakoted knife and light I have seen that was actually used the stuff comes off pretty quickly like paint. It may be good for some things but it cant stand up to EDC . Then it looks like a spray painted knife/light

Given that, maybe Broonzbane could paint his own scales? Then as they wear he can maintain the coating. Color all the way through is much better, though.

Bingo! Precisely the input I was hoping for--someone who has seen the results first hand. Thank you for confirming what I suspected!
