my birthday is coming up and as i have mostly folding knives i was going to ask for a fixed blade. im looking for something of decent quality in the 40-50 dollar range. any suggestions?

I'll probably get a lot of crap for this, but if you play your cards right, you can probably get a Buck Vanguard or a Ka-Bar USMC for that (at least at the high end of that range). I'd highly recommend both.

I agree with Samael on the USMC Kabar, great knife. Also, look at Mora but those arent as good but their cheaper so you might beable to get another if it breaks. Also the BK2, not sure how much those go for but their pretty solid from what I here

Not sure what are you are gonna use this knife for.
For wood carving and such,
Mora is a great choice. Don't let the price tag fool you.
Condor has a decent line of knives worth looking at (especially the bushcraft model)
For general use, can't go wrong with what other people already mentioned, depending on portability/size preference.
You got quite a few option. Good to see $50 can still take you somewhere.

How large of a knife, and what are you going to use it for? I love Moras, but just wait and buy yourself one later for $10; since this is for your birthday you may as well let someone else pay for a more expensive blade, right? :D

If you want something small, like a necker, you can get the Swamp Rat Scrapivore for $60 with the sheath(49.99 without). Sr101, 2.75" blade, and 6.25" overall. Pretty darn good price when compared to similar sized knives imo.
If you want a big camp knife/chopper; the Condor Hudson Bay is great. I got my first generation brand new for $20. The new version has an non-coated blade and goes for about $35. Comes with a pretty decent leather sheath too.
The Buck Vanguard mentioned above would make a nice medium sized utility knife if that's what you are after, or you could look into the Buck 100 series fixed blades. I would recommend the 105 or the 119.

The Ontario Ranger series is worth a look too.

I would try to find a used RAT/ESEE knife, like an ESEE-3 or even a HEST. Great knives from great guys. I love my HEST.

some great info here thanks for the responses! i would probably be using this knife mainly for just general outdoorsey stuff, i'm an avid angler so some in the field fish cleaning would definitely be on its to-do list. something thats a good size to get stuff done but not so big its unweildy for the smaller tasks. i'd say i wouldnt want a blade longer than 7 inches

Good buddy of mine been using his 18$ Mora HighQ knife for 2 years straight for game cleaning, skinning, angling, bushcraft, cooking.

It's ugly and kinda disgusting knowing that his knife has seen more bloody guts than some veterinarian around our place.
Takes a crazy sharp edge and it's anti slip grips are an advantage when wet or wearing thick winter gloves.
Be sure to take the stainless version! Whatever steel they use, this stuff can be left in blood for three days without rusting.

It is, however, no pryBAR though it can be used to baton.

Mora is good, I especially like the Mora Flex as a paring knife. An Izula is always handy to have. The Spyderco Moran Featherweight could be possible on the 'bay.

Queen makes an inexpensive fixed blade in D2 steel. I have one and paid around $50 for it. It was not sharp when I bought it, but with some work, it is quite sharp now.

The Spyderdo Moran is also another one to consider made in VG-10 steel. I don't recall the price, but I don't believe it was more than $75. Quite a nice little fixed blade. It is very light.

BK2 cleans fish but it certainly won't fillet them (not for me, anyway) ...

... but I'm not so sure you'll find one under your $50 ceiling. It's not much more but that's the limit you set. Have a look at Mora knives.

nice choice of words "inexpensive vs. cheap", with that in mind you cannot go wrong with Mora period.. they make great quality affordable blades that will clean fish like mad and not break the bank...

while you're at it and because they're so reasonable why don't you also pick yourself up a Buck 119 or similar model, little beefier and still able to clean fish.. :D

this way you get 2 for the price of one and still around your $50 range..

how can you go wrong with Buck??? you simply can't !!!!

happy Birthday.. !!!

Spyderco Moran is great option, at around your price range, But check the forums, you can get some great buys on some pre-owned knives
