Im looking for a nice 6 - 10 piece kitchen knife set w/ block. Good quality and affordable (up to $300) Anyone know of a good company/set ?

Better to buy three good quality knives and a block for $300 than 6 or 10 lesser quality. http://chefdepot.net/kershaw.htm

Having said that there are some nice kits here and a maple knife block.

I've spent quite a bit on kitchen knives, but in the last year or so we've really only use three: small and large spyderco serrated kitchen knives, and a Henckels 6 inch chefs knife.

I am starting to look at some nice knives for my wife for Christmas also. I am looking at the Spydeco knives as well as the Cutco knives(maybe too spendy). The A.G. Russell knives look nice also.

Cutco knives are terribly overpriced. Get something else. The Spydercos are good, but may not be pretty enough for your wife. Look for Japanese knives. Try www.macknife.com

some guy named murray something or another makes damn fine laminated knives, but I'd DEFINETLY go with Forschner/Victorinox, that what the real professionals really use.

I bought a few Henckels Professional S knives and like them. I will say, however, that I really only use two of them...the 7" Santoku and 5" Santoku. The Santoku shaped blades are very useful for most kitchen tasks. If I could do it all over, I would only buy those two knives and save money. It is 'impressive' to have a nice set of knives in the kitchen, but I'd rather save the money.
