I know this is a generic question.... but... what are the best folding knife brands out there? I'm not looking for expensive custom knives, on a budget. Recommendations?

Spyderco, Benchmade, and Kershaw are brands that are highly recomended. We may be able to suggest some specific knives if you gave us more specifications. Such as price, size, or some styles you were looking at. One of my favorite online knife stores is www.newgraham.com look at their selection and see what you like.

And welcome to blade forum.

These are good to start with

Spyderco
Victorinox
CRKT
Benchmade
Buck
Al Mar
Kershaw

Depends upon what you're looking for in a knife. For traditional bone/brass slipjoint patterns, Case and Queen. For heavy duty working knives, Buck. For modern styled synthetic and metal one hand opener etc, Spyderco and Benchmade. I like the Queen medium priced slipjoints and fixed blades in carved stag bone, most models are D2 steel and well finished for the price. Ya don't get D2 in too many $35-$60 knives.

Hi spud8 welcome to the forum

I've had good experiences with both Spyderco and Benchmade.

The Fallkniven U2 gets good reviews as well, though I haven't tried one , yet.

Cold steel gets a lot of bad rep but i have always liked their knives and they have held up well.

Benchmade is best IMO. Great knives, U.S. made (except red class) with many under $100, and most between $100 and $200...

OK so I like the one handed openers... the companies that seem the most attractive to me are:

Cold Steel
Benchmade
Emerson
Columbia River / CRKT
Spyderco
Buck
Kershaw
Al Mar
AG Russel

This is discluding companies I don't like (I generally dislike the military themed brands). Are these all pretty good quality for one hand folders?

I will be daring and say Kershaw is definately top three in terms of value - if not the best (along with Spyderco and Benchmade). I would personally steer away from CRKT - in my opinion they're going downhill fast.

The answer is YES. Keep in mind that most opinions on what knifes are good is the result of personal preference. That been said, many, if not most of the folders sold by the brands in your list are known their quality and value. Personally, I'm partial to CS Voyager series and Benchmade Griptillians.

Whatever you get, shop around. There are a few sites in the Net where you can get good prices. eBay.com and Wholesalehunter.com are the first to come to mind. You may also want to check your local gun shows. I bought a Ka-Bar Kukri Machete for $30.00, a Leatherman new Wave for $38.00 and a CS Carbon V Master Hunter for $45.00 at gun shows.

For folders, I like Kershaw and Spyderco, because they are well made, and offer such a wide variety of styles.
