The box knife have is fine, but I think I can get more out of a longer blade. Removing carpet specifically, been getting into more residential demo work lately.

I’m thinking a plain edge wharncliffe endura. High wear resistance preferred, sharpening won’t be an issue.

You guys got any experience or recommendations?

Cheers!

Thinking out loud, maybe the wharncliffe delica is better due to it being a thinner blade.

^^The above in K390 sounds like a good choice. I have no personal experience with it as of yet, but have heard nothing but good things, and have a Stretch 2 on the way as we speak.

You’ll wear out a folder the first week demo-ing carpet. It’s very abrasive and full of dirt and grit. I use a Stanley 499 and carry a small pocket stone for quick touchups. I also have nearby a hawkbill linoleum knife.

And wear some tough gloves, cause it’ll beat up your hands.

I usually recommend a disposable blade system in this type of situation too.

I'm wondering if this scenario calls for a fully serrated blade? Pain in the butt to sharpen tho.
Maybe a Cold Steel Mini Tuff or CS Voyager with tanto blade? I admittedly like Spyderco serrations better than CS tho.

Is a small, fixed blade knife an option where you live?
Mora makes a serrated rope knife for $17. Maybe a great place to start that wouldn't be a lot of $.

Manix 2 LW was my demo knife. As long as you can sharpen. It's a beast.

This is the right answer, here. And definitely plus one to the gloves.

K390 is very wear resistant and cuts like hell. It is a pretty expensive knife to use and wear out on carpets though. I love mine but I think a box knife with packs of 50 blades is what I'd be doing. I tried using a few different knives on carpet and I reverted to throwaways pretty quickly. It wasn't just the carpets it was the sand and gravel that was in the carpets. Quartz grit like I was up against will do bad things to any edges including high hardness steel with vanadium carbides.

Anybody that recommends anything that isn’t a replaceable blade utility knife or box cutter ain’t never done any sort of cement or demo work. There’s no other answer. Find one with a comfortable grip. Stanly made one that was nice and rounded, no hot spots. I used it after the flood of 2016 after throwing away 3 fancy foldable replaceable blade knives.

they actually make these... things called carpet knives :P
if you're doing any significant carpet work, a wharn just won't do

Milwaukee fast back, or the one above my post.
Carpet and lot of other remodeling/demo gonna be really rough on a knife.
Milwaukee makes a folder pretty cheap to. Could make a good beater.
I do maintenance and repairs on rentals and I’m going to use fastback or something unless it’s an emergency my knife not gonna be used for much demolition. Nope nope!

There are some options if you want to abuse a knife for the sheer joy of it, but for cutting carpet you should get the right tool for the right job, like a Stanley Classic 99 Retractable Utility Knife.

Go look at Outdoor Edge knives. More blade length than a box cutter, replaceable blades. I think there’s a gut hook style blade that may work well on some carpets.
If you just have to have a folder, then yes, Delica with K390. Buy two, you’re going to need the extra one.

I was hoping someone would convince me to say a k390 delica wharncliffe, but The Mastiff The Mastiff has always been even keeled with his suggestions.

I guess I’ll be boring and go with the box knife.

I’ll let you guys know if I cave.

Currently I bring a sebenza, rat rodent 4, and kobalt box cutter on site. I need to get a pic.

I never knew how hard carpet was on a blade until I decarpeted a set of steps with my brand new Sebenza insingo. As a knife guy, it was a hard thing to accept but I decided it was a job for a disposable utility blade if I ever had to do it again. With that said, if I did carpet professionally or regularly, I'd invest in one of these Klein hawkbills with replaceable blades.
