Spyderco Sharpmaker hands down. Very easy to learn on, and with some moderate practice can create an extremely sharp edge.

They can be found on Ebay for about $40US, that should fit your price range well.

thanks for the info...now ive never sharpened a knife before..is it pretty easy with this system??...also thanks for the warm welcome :)

The Sharpmaker system includes an instructional DVD and full color book to learn how to sharpen any type of sharp thing. :)

The DVD and book are very easy to follow and provide good instructions of the unit. I had never sharpened anything either, though I used to watch my grandfather put wicked edges on knives with a benchstone. He's been practicing for 50 years though.

The sharpmaker is pretty foolproof. The only tip I have for you is that the corners of the stones can round off the tip of a knife VERY easily. Do not sharpen all the way to the tip with the corners. Save the tip for the flats of the stone and TAKE YOUR TIME. You'lll understand all of that perfectly if you had the system in front of you right now.

A Sharpmaker will work wonders. So will some benchstones. The SlideSharp should work, too (I haven't tried, but it removes steel from the edge and keeps a consistant angle and that's all you need).

Another vote for the Sharpmaker. I have that, a DMT diamond stone and a bastard file for axes and machetes and that gets any job done.

I agree with my brothers 100% on this one. The only thing I can add would be to have at least one really coarse diamond stone or a really coarse high quality stone made of ceramic, aluminum oxide or just anything that can cut metal fast. That is the only thing in my opinion that the Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker lacks. For blades that are really beat up that need to be totally re-profiled and have the nicks and burrs abraded out you need a fairly coarse benchstone to get the blade preped for the Sharpmaker to operate more efficiently. But the Sharpmaker is really user friendly

One more tidbit of advice>> watch the video/DVD at least twice completely before using it. Also I would sharpen a couple of old kitchen knives or some old user pocketknife for practice before I would tackle a newer, high quality blade with modern steel. Practice does indeed make perfect on the Sharpmaker. And I do recommend to go to the Spyderco Factory Outlet Store to get your sharpmaker. Great Folks that work there can give you some valuable assistance. Just go to Spyderco.com

Welcome to the forums. Hope you have fun and learn a lot. I have over the years.

I have to go with the Spyderco Sharpmaker and DMT diamond stone combo. That'll cover 90%+ of your sharpening needs. A nice strop would come in handy too but by no means is it required.

As an aside, I'm still on my first set of rods that came with my Sharpmaker many, many years ago. Still going strong. Great system.

Just adding to the pile.

Yes the sharpmaker is the way to go.

I managed to pick up couple different systems over my time, and still fall back to freehand, and on the sharpmakers sticks i do this.

One thought though, on the Slidesharp i would not use on my lawnmower blade, the ceramic rods that come with are long(Nice), however they have the finish of a debarked tree.

Very poor quality, very inconsistent abrasive quality from one cm to the next on either rod, really a poor investment imho, it will tear chunks out blade edges. They really dropped the ball on this setup, on top of this, they are so out of round they will not roll on glass, a trick from pushrods on ole motors.

The sharpmakers rods are perfectly consistent thier entire lengths, atleast mine are. They feel like silk to me and i really love the quality of them.
There is no comparison between these and the other the slidsharp carp.

Fanboy out.
