There's a grip of 'em. Here's some suggestions:

Spyderco: Cricket, Jester, Ladybug, Lava, Spin, and Starling (Byrd).

Boker: SubcomF and Wharcom.

SOG: Twitch I

Kershaw: Chive

If it's for school use why not a Victorinox Classic, the scissors may come in handy as well !

Tim Wegner Mouse. It comes in various grades from zytel to G10, 440C to S30V, $30 to 80. A nice stout lockback, ~2" blade 3 finger handle. Tim Wegner supposedly dressed a small deer with one during his design testing.

yes i did have one of those a while back for skool but i was jw what else is out there
maybe ill get the chive thats a nice knife

I'd recommend the Subcom personally. The Cricket IS great for light utility work though. Most of the Spyderco offerings need a small fob for more comfortable grip.

Joe,
It depends on what you want the knife to do for you. Either you want it to be an well rounded Classic Swiss Army utility knife or you want it for self defence. I'd recommend the Classic SA as previously mentioned or for SD I'd go for the Spyderco SPOT Neck Knife Plain Edge or something very simular. The SPOT is very secure to hold with the finger hole and a great defence blade. Just imagine doing the "windmill with two of these in your fists
its a bit on the spendy side, you might find something similar for less.

I would go with a SAK classic. It is probably one of the most sheeple friendly knives ever, both because of its fame and diminutive size.

i personally have a little tiny 1.5 inch blade length bear & son folder from the local hardware store. it was $15. it has held up well, and i got it sharp enough to cut thread when i am sewing. i touch it up usually once a week on a ceramic rod. it is a good knife, and my first good quality knife (i have a ton of bargain bin cheapies floating around in my desk with my battle axe). the (nickel silver?) bolsters are a little tarnished, but i have had it in my pocket every day for a while now.
i actually intended to buy a lockback with a spear point blade, a little tiny bit bigger than the one i have, but they were all in the same boxes and i didn't check my box to see if it was the same knife. i ended up with a non locking tiny slightly curvy blade design. i like it though, and it is great for everything from cutting food (i always keep the joint clean though) to fine whittling to cutting cord and thread. it also zips through boxes.

I was sittin around one night and found on eBay a Linton CarbonFiber ATS-34 Folder with a leather pouch and thumb stud. $29.00. It is a cool little knife with a 1.25in blade and pretty sharp. Give it a look....

Victorinox makes two versions of its Tinker. The standard version as a 2.75" blade. But there is also a "Small Tinker" version with a large blade less than 2 1/2". I bought one for my daughter.

I carried a tinker for years and used it frequently. It's not so big as to be a lump in the pocket, but still carries a variety of blades. I highly recommend it.

I found the small tinker at knives plus. Good outfit.

Saberman beat me to it; that A.G. Russell is a little beauty.

$24.95 for VG-10 and titanium, made in Japan, and with a lifetime warranty!
Blade is 1-7/8.

Definately look at the Boker Subcom. I think it is perfect for what you are looking for.

Take care and good luck. Heath
