What would people recommend as far as good survival / fighting / camp knives for a multi day backpacking trip in some pretty wild, ensnowed area? My requirements are:

- Synthetic handle (*NO* metal handle)
- 6" to 9" blade
- Knife needs to be polivalent enough to be useable to build a camp, or as a weapon
- double guard preferred
- $300 max, but would prefer to stay below $200
- Custom OK at a higher price if available immediately (and has to satisfy firt 4 conditions.

I'd love to get your opinion...

Thanks,

JD

I have owned numerous fixed blades over the years. The Busse Bm-e,Busse ZT Bm-e, Busse Satin Jack, Busse Basic 9, Becker 9, etc. You should also check out Newt Livesays Air Assault, 101st Air Borne, 82nd Air Borne.
There are a lot of options. Ask around and get some more opinions. If I were you I would consider the kind of edge geometry you need, the size, weight, the handle shape and handle material, how good of steel you need. I am sure that the Becker 9 would probably do the job for you at a fair price of $60. You could also check out a Busse SH-E for $297 for a high end blade. Swamp Rat knife works would fit in the middle with their 7 inch bladed model(Camp Tramp) is about $130 and the 9 inch model is $150(Battle Rat)
You can't go wrong with any of these blades.
Hope this helps

Luke,

Thanks. I think that the Busse are very overpriced, and pretty ugly to boot in my eyes. The Becker is definitely an option: not a pretty girl, but at that price, you can't argue with it. As to the blade shape, something either spear, drop, or clip point, unserrated, would work. Any modern steel is probably OK too - I have a small preference for Carbon steels, but I'm sure there are some good, not too brittle SS too.

There are two I've almost indulged in. The AG Russell Deer Hunter and the SOG X-42 field knife (not the Recondo tanto /x-42 from SOG). Those are my two preferences in production outdoor knives.

But I've restrained myself and am saving for something from Trace Rinaldi, probably the TTTK.

Thanks - I want something a bit more pointy than the swamp rat, and with a guard, ideally double.

Very nice, but a bit too close to my max price point. Plus there's no mention of the availability, and I need something that could be delivered next week.

That pretty well kicks anything custom out of the mix and most everything high end. Get yourself a BK&T 9, beat the heck out of it while you decide if "one day" you want to get something else. It probably will NOT be cuz the Becker failed to meet expectations!!

Joss,

You've got mail. How about a 1-hour delivery time??? ;) :D :D

Cold Steel Trailmaster or Recon Scout.

All - thanks. I think I'm going to try to find a Gerber BMF. I've got several leads already.

Thanks,

The military tip on the Swamp Rats increases the penetration highly without the extreme loss of strength that is found with extended clips.

Never mind that its very affordable....the BK&T BK-9 will more then fill the bill for what you want.
