What scary movies are good for renting this month? I'm looking more for horror, than out and out gorefests like the Saw movies. That said, I am always up for zombie movies. I wasn't a big fan until I saw Land of the Dead, and Shaun of the Dead, my favorites of the genre. Been watching bits and pieces of 28 Days Later when I had the time, for the second time (28 Months Later wasn't that good). Saw the Host, an interesting movie, the monster was not as good as the FX we're used to, but the story wasn't bad. Saw a real money waster, Dracula 3000. I knew it was going to be an extremely bad movie, I just underestimated how bad it would be.

Any good scary movies out there? Unknowns, horror standbys? I have John Carpenters the Thing, one of my favorites. I saw the Excorcist once, that was enough for me :(. I forget the name of it, but the movie that George Romero put out after Dawn of the Dead. The scientists and soldiers in the bunker, Day of the Dead I think? I was going to see that, but while the store had a disc box, they didn't have it on DVD or VHS.

I want to see Zombieland, and they're working on bringing World War Z to the big screen.

Halloween. Halloween II.

and if you just want to continue with the series, even though they get sloppy and lazy:

Halloween III (which has NOTHING to do with Michael Myers), IV, V, VI, H20 and Resurrection (which absolutely sucked).

The Thing.

The Thing from Another World.

House of 1000 Corpses.

The Devil's Rejects.

Last House on the Left (the original, if you can find it)

American Gothic (a GREAT movie)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original)

Demons

DemonsII

Night of the Demons

Dark Night of the Scarecrow

Neon Maniacs (campy as hell, but fun)

My Bloody Valentine (the original)

Any of the obscure 1970's/1980's horror flicks.

The original Halloween I & II are some of my favorites, as well as RZ directed remake.

The 1941 "The Wolfman" with Lon Chaney JR is my all time favorite though, and I can't wait for the new version with Benicio Del Toro.

The two movies that freaked me out the most aren't slasher flicks. #1 is Event Horizon. First time I watched it I wouldn't turn out the lights & go to sleep afterward. #2 is Jacob's Ladder. All kinds of nightmarish.

For classic horror flicks the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is freaking awesome. Down & dirty in a way that few horror movies today are. John Carpenter's The Thing is another good one.

And, while not really a horror movie, there's something disturbing about Pan's Labyrinth.

Also worth checking out is Let the Right One In, somewhere inbetween a touching coming of age story and a demented bloodbath.

Now THESE are vampire films!

I'd add something probably not considered a typical horror film, though certainly with horrific content, Salo: The 120 Days of Sodom. Sit yerself down with some O'Henry bars and chocolate pudding, and try to keep 'er all down! :D

I just read about that movie on www.imdb.com. It sounds pretty horrific indeed!

Good stuff! Some of these are duplicates.

Halloween (the first)

The Fog (often neglected, highly underrated. See the original, the remake was of course trash)

The Thing

Nosferatu

The Shining

The Storm of the Century

Rose Red

Evil Dead II for fun, humorous horror. It's like a roller coaster ride.

Hellraiser. Based on Clive Barker's novella The Hellbound Heart. Clive Barker, 'nuff said!

Lord of Illusions. More Clive Barker and more of his imaginative, stylish horror. Worth a rental for sure.

Frailty. More psychological than visceral, but disturbing and unique.

The House By The Cemetery. Has the usual incomprehensible plot of most Giallo flicks, but there are moments of truly creepy horror.

30 days of night
House of 1000 corpses
The Exorcist
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
(Zombieland kind of sucked)
Return of the living dead (the first funny zombie movie)
Zombie Diaries
Stir of Echos
The Myst
Aliens 1, 2
Astronauts Wife
Pitch Black

We just saw Audition.

If you can handle subs ( it is rare for me dig a subtitled film..) I recommend this highly.

ALOT of good suggestions here. Does my heart good to see so many informed and experienced Horror buffs in here. Below are a few not mentioned already, but I strongly suggest them.

In the Mouth of Madness (good, solid John Carpenter horror)

Pontypool(more cerebral, but not too much so...very odd and very cool)

REC(the original Spanish movie that inspired the English language remake called Quarantine...the former is much better than the latter...and i am not one who always thinks the original is better, I liked the American version of The Ring alot more than the Japanese version)

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (a good bit of nicely clever humor in with the horror, but don't let it fool ya, it's still a horror movie)

Go to the theater and watch Paranormal Activity. Scariest movie ever, no gore. I've watched every horror movie out there and lately none of them scare me. I've been dying for a movie like Paranormal Activity!

"Let The Right One In" is a great film (and I typically hate vampire movies) but you need to watch it with the subtitles. Two other great vampire films are "Habit" and "Martin."

"Salo" is one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen. Demonically depraved. But the sets and cinematography were brilliant. Not a Halloween film. Also has subtitles.

"Martyrs" is almost as disturbing as Salo, but is more mainstream and could be watched on Halloween. Has subtitles.

The ORIGINAL "Evil Dead" scared Stephen King, and you must see it.

For zombie flicks, you need to see the ORIGINAL (1978) "Dawn of the Dead", the 1999 REMAKE of "Night of the living Dead", and the independant film "Hide and Creep."

But, my all time top recommendation for Halloween viewing is "MURDER PARTY."

I agree (on the depravity and the cinematography), but I couldn't watch it. :barf: Just ugly and sickening.
