Since my last post on the forums, I have lurked regularly, with no news to report until now. After some enjoyable talks with Jerry and the crew and after an appropriate wait,I just received my CG Satin Jack and Paul's Hatchet.
The Good news: these are brilliantly designed pieces, flawlessly executed. The Bad news: these are brilliantly designed pieces, flawlessly executed... so much so that I can't envision really needing another fixed blade combo. Be advised that they have only been subject to intense scrutiny, grip shifts and hair razing, so this is an early report. Here is what I have observed: SJ: as the pictures reveal, the handle is smaller in diameter than an "E"...but fits my hand more comfortably in more positions, especially a natural grip. Every grip I tried was user friendly. It has a diagonal pattern of flutes cut into the micarta for security, they allow a secure hold w/o being too agressive. The balance is neutral-right at the first rivet. All grind lines are even and symetrical. The blade is just wicked sharp along its entire length...I could shave finger hair with the tip!. The choil nicely accomodates your index finger for choke-up work. There is enough forward mass for chopping, a nice flat grind for slicing and a sharp tip for piercing. This knife oozes function.
Pauls Hatchet: as much as I like the Jack, the Hatchet is a testament to the genius of its designer and maker. Same sort of handle as the SJ, but the oal is less by about 1.5"...Oh what balance...just ahead of the first rivet. As you move to the business end all former bets are off. The "head" has curves and cut outs that allow choke up grips for slicing, whittling and ulu style cutting. (Look at the hatchet article in Tactical Knives...Paul's Hatchet is even more versatile and its INFI....YAHOO!)The edge, symetrically ground, is also screaming sharp all curves, radii and grinds are superb.
All in all, I am astonished. My interests include hiking and canoeing. I can see hiking w/ the hatchet and a folder and have all my cutting needs met. Knowing me, I will bring the SJ too and not be weighed down. On a canoe trip, I think I would keep PH on my belt...it is an awesome camp/ home/ yard tool. Jerry has outdone himself...as I use these I will report back and discuss the sheaths.
In nucleamazement....I thank you

Geoff,
Glad to hear you got the SJ and PH. Nice review also :D
That truly is some bad news ;) :D
Welcome to the Wonderful World of Busse, so whats next?? :)

And I just got my folder. The reindeer sled just took off from the roof with the big pink bunny waving good bye to me. ;)

You guys are not fooling me on this mind game. It doesn't exist. It's just like us landing on the moon; I want to believe but ...

Geoff,
I'm sure you will find an excuse to buy more Busses. We all do.
Yours in nuclear knife needs,
Andrew Pinchen
