this is great news for my fellow Texans:

APR 19, 2017
TEXAS “ILLEGAL KNIFE” REPEAL BILL UNANIMOUSLY PASSES COMMITTEE
In the “don’t mess with Texas” category, we find state lawmakers reportedly working to eliminate carry knife restrictions from state law.

Knife Rights’ bipartisan Texas Knife Law Reform Bill, HB 1935, that would repeal the ban on ALL “illegal knives” in Texas statutes, has passed out of the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee by a unanimous vote and is now headed to the Calendars Committee. HB 790, the other knife law reform bill that only repeals the ban on daggers, also passed out of the Committee.

H.B. 1935 pretty much removes the term “illegal knife” from Texas statutes, while adding specifics about knives as applies to the expulsion of students in Texas schools.

The rest of H.B. 1935 deals with eliminating the term “illegal knife” from state law, which makes sense to me.

Sponsored by Rep. John Frullo with co-sponsor Rep. Harold Dutton, HB 1935 would complete Knife Rights’ efforts to bring knife freedom to Texas by removing entirely the definition of “illegal knife” in Section 46.01(6) of the Penal Code. This includes the prohibition on double edge blades, Bowie knives and the 5.5-inch carry limit.

Great news...hope you guys eventually reach what we have here in TN...basically nothing is illegal in terms of blades!

It always hit me as funny that TX of all places would have the Bowie knife illegal.

It was a great day when TN abolished all the really stupid laws on knives.

Vive Liberty... (0:35 min)

The finest two words spoken in the entire movie.

It is addictive once you've had a taste.

Don't mess with Texas! Lol TX has so many great laws going for it, or should I say the lack of bs control laws, like very few state gun regs, no zoning laws in Houston, you can drive on the beaches, no state income taxes, and on and on. Surly they can get yawls knife laws up to snuff w the rest of the freedoms you all readily enjoy! I mean you can cc a pistol w a cc holders license right? Can cc a pistol but not open carry a 6in blade come on?

They have conceal carry and open carry now as long as you have your CCL. Plus castle doctrine that says your can is part of your home and no license needed to carry one in your vehicle

That's great! The way it should be imho. I'm in KS. We have the same sort of thing along w stand your ground laws and the like. We also have basically anything goes knife laws which is nice. I've always said though if I go broke in KS and have to start over I'm starting over in TX!

You're giving Texas too much credit. There might not be a state income tax, but sales tax and property taxes are high enough to make up the difference. And for every thing they'll let you do, there's some stupid thing you can't.

For instance, here's an article by an El Paso Assistant D.A. bragging about, and trying to justify, prosecuting a woman for possession of a "knuckle clutch." In case you don't know what a "knuckle clutch" is, it's a purse with a handle that looks like brass knuckles.

And there are still lots of parts of Texas where it's illegal to sell booze. You want a bottle of JW Blue? Gotta drive to the next county, or the next. When I moved here in the 70s, it was illegal to sell anything but food on Sundays. They'd rope off the parts of grocery stores where they stocked things like batteries and diapers, not to mention the beer.

And there's lots of other puritanical stuff that's still on the books. A couple years ago, the cops raided several business here in East Podunk and arrested the clerks for distribution of "obscene devices." Because selling a vibrator is a crime in Texas. The Fifth Circuit later ruled that the law violated the First Amendment a couple years ago, but before that, although the law was not often enforced, every now and then you'd read about some store getting raided, or some woman getting arrested for hosting a "F.U.N. Party."

But at least they're moving in the right direction with knives. I can even carry a switchblade now if I want to, as long as the blade isn't over 5 1/2 inches and a cop doesn't think it looks like a "dagger" (which is not legally defined, but which is illegal to carry).

Way to keep it real. Sad when the law is used to chase headlines. almost invariably for political aspirations. Nice they had a cop on the jury to make the case for them in the jury room. Sure the $250 the state received more than covered the cost of prosecution :(. And giving someone a record for being a passenger in a car was just a bonus.

Last month Gov. Greg Abbot signed the knife bill. As of September 1, 2017, swords, Bowie knives, daggers, and so forth will no longer be defined as "illegal knives" under Texas law. There will still be restrictions on where you can carry something with a blade over 5 1/2 inches (schools, bars, courthouses, etc.), but a FBM will be legal to carry most places, and my BOSC ID pretty much anywhere. And that's a good thing.
