"What has happened to this society...when I was a kid us boys would carry our fixed-blade hunting knives to school on our belts." My dad always says. No one ever thought that an 8 year old kid would stab his brother. Now if the schools find a nail file with a point they expell you.:mad:

What are your opinions of this? No, I don't think they should start allowing knives back into schools, but why did this world allow itself to become so dangerous that a campus can become a warzone? Tell me your opinions on this.

Steve C.

P.S. Wasn't sure which forum to post this in, so it may get moved.

CH, I think this needs to be handled like everything else in the world, you have to consider the individual thats going to be carrying the knife. The biggest problem this country has, beside all the liberals :D, is laws are made in response to events that happen, not by common sense. What we just went thru with 911 is a prime example. 19 people take box cutters onto a plane and use them to highjack the plane. What do the law makers do, they ban all the honest citizens from carrying a knife on a plane.

Yes, there was a time when just about everyone carried a knife. People my age saw the last of that era.

This is an extension of the caveat, "Evil persists where good men do nothing."

Predators hunt for the weakest member of the pack. I never got picked on by the football team, I carried a 5" Italian stiletto and everyone knew it. Of course, little dweebs always got their hats stolen on the bus.

Now if a pre-teen or teen shows any sign of displeasure, they send him to an anger management group. Possibly gender equity counseling. Each kid knows ten ways to wuss and no way to handle a bully.

When the government made it a crime for parents to punish their children, many just gave up. They relinquished responsibility to the schools. We all know what a cluster f**k they are.
That is an over simplification of the problem, but, thats where it started,IMO.

I agree. I am quite dissapointed with the way society is treating knives. I knife is a tool. Someone that is bent on hurting others will find a way. A ballpoint pen can easily put a neat little hole in someones neck. The people who crashed the planes in New York did so with knives that could propably pass through even todays security checks. I don't see the problem of people having knives in planes, the problem was lack of security in the cockpit. A knife as a weapon is only as good as the person weilding the blade. All the millions of dollars and the inconviences caused by 9/11 are a waste of effort. On 9/11, we were taken by surprise, it won't happen again. The terrorist threats are taken far to seriously. The people that we have in detension are going to tell the interagators what they want to hear. You think those dogs are telling the truth? Not likely. The nature of the attacks are not even known by the people who perpetrate them, let alone some stupid POS in prison. I think that it's time the people of the U.S. wake up and look at this thing realistically. Adding guards to airplanes, keeping secure cockpits and arming the pilots would do much more good than treating everyone like a criminal.

I gotta aggree with SD anything could be used as a weapon, from a Mack truck to a chainsaw. Hell you could use someone else as a weapon.
People hellbent on causing harm are gonna do it no matter what.
The thing that bothers me is that average citizens have to pay the price for the stupidity of some lawmakers who play on the fears of a few scared people.

My brother up in AK told me a story a few years ago after the Columbine Shooting, about how the school system had instituted a policy against the kids bringing Guns to school. Down here that makes a lot of sense to people, but up there the kids have to deal with moose, and brown bears on the way to school. The parents protested, and voiced their concern for the safety of the children.

The solution was to install gun lockers at the entrance and have the kids surrender their guns upon entry to the school.( Notice I said guns, and not weapons) The kids up there are taught the value of a tool such as a gun, and respect for the inherent danger represented in the responsibility, of being allowed to carry one.

The subject hasn't come up since 9-11 but I have to wonder if the schools views haven't changed.

The reponsibility of teaching our children to respect life, and the danger of possesing, and using guns and knives, belongs to us the parents, and not some scared administrator of the school system.

I carried a pocketknife to school everyday from 3rd grade on. I found an antique "switchblade" while fishing with my grandpa and took it for show-and-tell! Hunting/trapping were legit excuses for being tardy and everyone knew our guns were in our cars or you could leave it in the principles office if you rode with someone else.
Never a problem with the above but if you really wanted to create a discipline situation you could lie, show disrespect, or get caught smoking on school grounds.

i don't know how this whole violent trend came into being but I have to admit violence in schools and in general is becoming a real problem. Some people blame it on movies and television but doing so would be ignorant

.....says it all... :(

"Hunters seek what they [WANT].., Seekers hunt what they [NEED]"

I would not blame TV or video games (yes, the Germans is blaming a game called Counterstrike. I play counterstrike, and bring folders to University. You don't see me slashing people's throats)
I would blame the lack of discipline of the newer generation, and perhaps the lack of respect for life.
It was apparent that the killer in Germany acquired the arms legitimately, but honestly, if he had to kill, he can probably fashion some kind of homemade weapon to do the same job. It's a shame to see the general public blames the weapon, while it's apparent that it's the person responsible for his own action.
Maybe if someone there did have a handgun there, the tragedy would have been stopped.
And I doubt whether the gunman is sane. Killilng 17 people just because he's expelled?

Maybe it has something to do with the lack of ethics and morals?
How many of you said the Pledge of Allegiance everyday in school?
Sang the Star Spangled Banner, along with the guy on TV, at he beginning of the ballgame?
How many say Grace at dinner time?
On Gilligan's Island, they weren't allowed to show MaryAnne's navel (neither could Jeanne).
John Wayne didn't say the 'F' word.
The good guys always won.

If we glorify the taking of lives, indescriminate use of weapons, and selfishness in general...
What is the logical result?

My daughter is 15 & sometimes I feel sorry for her. It seems like there is no innocense left in the world, anymore.

I don't necessarily agree that pledging your allegience or singing the anthems is necessary for a person to maintain moral and ethical values, but yes, I think the newer generation doesn't have the same moral and ethical value.
Undoubtedly there are some kids out there that think killing is "cool"....
This is just making the law-abiding citizens more trouble. And that's not only on guns, this may affect knife laws too.

The Pledge and the anthems instill unity.
Us, not me. Part of the group. (Don't even get me started on family, or lack thereof...)
I used the anthem/pledge as an example of how different things were when I was in grade school (early 60's). Geeze, we even had close order drill in the school yard in 4th grade...left face, right face, about face...really!
PS 66 Richmond Hill NYC!!!

Gangs (for the most part) fought with fists, maybe bats, rarely knives.
I carried a knife. My Dad knew it, he did too.
But heaven forbid if I ever pulled it out in anger. To this day he'll ask to use my knife & when he asks it'll be "Hand me your knife." Not "Do you have a knife?"

I don't mean to say that the time I grew up in was all cake and cookies.
We had "Duck & Cover Drills" in school (A-Bomb defense...wanna scare a 2nd grader? Tell him this is what to do when the Rooskies drop 'The Big One' ).
Busing.
Segregation.
Race riots.
VietNam

Every generation has its troubles.
It just seems to me, that it is all about "I, me, my" now.

Perfect example:
The NY Rangers. The highest paid hockey team in the NHL.
Can't make the playoffs.

There is no "I" in "We"

Just my inflated 2¢

That what we have created are safe havens for murderers? Most places where the citizens are forbidden to carry weapons and defend themselves are the most likely places for a mass homicide. Its not that terribly often that a lunatic goes on a rampage at the local gun range or IPSC match. He might very well turn into a bullet sponge in the last few fleeting seconds of his life. But...Airplanes, Office builings, schools....THATS where you can find lots of compliant unarmed people to kill. Did you also notice that most homicides in progress (for lack of a better term, thats what we refer to them as when teaching a course) end when the bad guys are met with a violent counter attack? They either flee or kill themselves. Most of them do not want a fight.
I don't know what the answer is though. There is a distinct trend in America to glorify the violence/Rap/Hip Hop/ gangster role. Since we have a woefully inadequate judicial system, bad behavior is not punished. Man, like water will find the path of least resistence. "I'm cool...chicks Dig me...I'm a Bada**..." if I play this role...AND I don't get into trouble for it..I will continue. Theres no reason to obey the laws of civilized society. The citizen who does fight back will have years of criminal/civil courts to deal with. We just have it all backwards. The CRIMINAL should be in fear, not the CITIZEN. I can only hope that the pendulum will swing back again eventually.
